Cross‐prevalence of migraine and bipolar disorder

Abstract: Migraine is prevalent within the BD population, particularly among BD II subjects. It is associated with an increased risk of suicidal behaviour and comorbid anxiety disorders. Conversely, migraine sufferers have high rates of current and lifetime psychopathology. A greater understanding of this comorbidity may contribute to our knowledge of the underlying mechanisms of BD.

“…Comorbid migraine affects nearly one in four patients with BD (293), and confers significantly increased risk for suicidal behavior, comorbid psychiatric disorders, and rapid cycling, as well as a greater number of mood episodes and lifetime hospitalizations compared to patients without migraine (293,294). The prevalence of migraine is reportedly higher in patients with BD II than in those with BD I (35% versus 19%) (293).…”

“…We found in the literature a well-established association between migraine and depression, but among the BD population it has been indicated that BD II may co-exist with migraine more often than BD I [25][26][27][28] . It has been reported by other groups that these co-occurring diseases are associated with greater dysfunction, an increased risk of suicidal behaviour and comorbid anxiety disorders 8,25 . As migraine is associated with the female gender and we have a higher percentage of women in the sample, it is possible that migraine prevalence may be, in fact, an artifact of the unequal distribution of gender.…”
