Cross-Lingual Argumentative Relation Identification: from English to Portuguese

Abstract: Argument mining aims to detect and identify argument structures from textual resources. In this paper, we aim to address the task of argumentative relation identification, a subtask of argument mining, for which several approaches have been recently proposed in a monolingual setting. To overcome the lack of annotated resources in less-resourced languages, we present the first attempt to address this subtask in a cross-lingual setting. We compare two standard strategies for crosslanguage learning, namely: proje… Show more

“…L'AM est une forme avancée de compréhension du langage humain par une machine, qui est définie dans sa plus simple expression comme « la détection automatique de la structure argumentative d'un texte, la classification de ses composantes ainsi que de leurs relations argumentatives 7 » (Moens, 2018, p. 2). Le texte analysé est initialement en langage naturel, c'est-à-dire en langage courant (Rocha et al, 2018).…”

“…Argument Mining. There is an increasing number of works in the computational argumentation research field in recent years, such as argument mining (Shnarch et al, 2018;Trautmann et al, 2020), argument relation detection (Rocha et al, 2018;Hou and Jochim, 2017), argument quality assessment (Wachsmuth et al, 2017;Gleize et al, 2019;, argument generation (Hua and Wang, 2018;Hua et al, 2019a;Schiller et al, 2020), etc. Stab and Gurevych (2014) and Persing and Ng (2016) both propose pipeline approaches to identify argumentative discourse structures in persuasive essays, which mainly includes two steps: extracting argument components and identifying relations.…”

“…The same problem is addressed by Fossum and Abney (2005) by exploiting multiple sources for the same target document. Projection has been used also for argumentation mining (Eger et al, 2018;Rocha et al, 2018), to create training data for machine learning models for low-resource languages. In particular, Eger et al (2018) argue against the necessity of human-translated parallel corpora as a resource, since they obtain comparable results using machine translated parallel documents.…”
