Cross-cultural replication of the five-factor model and comparison of the NEO-PI-R and MMPI-2 PSY-5 scales in a Dutch psychiatric sample.

Abstract: The authors investigated cross-cultural replicability of the five-factor model (FFM) of personality as represented by the revised NEO Personality Inventory (NEO-PI-R; P. T. Costa & R. R. McCrae, 1992) in a sample of 423 Dutch psychiatric patients. Also, NEO-PI-R domain scales were compared with the Personality Psychopathology Five (PSY-5; A. R. Harkness & J. L. McNulty, 1994) scales of the Minnesota Multiphasic Personality Inventory-2 (J. N. Butcher, W. G. Dahlstrom, J. R. Graham, A. Tellegen, & B. Kaemmer, 20… Show more

“…Consistent with this interpretation, and replicating the results of previous investigations (see e.g. Egger et al, 2003;Trull et al, 1995), we found a greater degree of overlap between the two models in terms of the N and E domains of the NEO PI-R and the negative emotionality and extraversion scales of PSY-5 ( Table 2). The NEO PI-R O, A and C domains, and the PSY-5 psychoticism, aggressiveness and disconstraint scales were associated with less overlap across the two models, and these fi ndings may account for the stronger association between the PSY-5 scales and the paranoid, schizotypal, narcissistic and antisocial PD symptom counts.…”

“…Research examining the retest reliability of the MMPI-2 PSY-5 scales has shown, overall, adequate temporal stability across 6-month to 5-year intervals (Colotla, Bowman, & Shercliffe, 2001;Harkness, McNulty, Ben-Porath, & Graham, 2002a;Trull et al, 1995). Investigations of the MMPI-2 PSY-5 items and scales using confi rmatory factor analytic Egger, De May, Derksen, & van der Staak, 2003;Quilty & Bagby, in press) and item response (Rouse, Finger, & Butcher, 1999) procedures support the fi ve-factor structure of the MMPI-2 PSY-5 items, and verify the capacity of the MMPI-2 PSY-5 scales to distinguish meaningfully 'high scorers' from 'low scorers' on each of the domains, although the interpretation of such distinctions is dependent on the PSY-5 scale in question. The construct validity of the various domains has also been reported in several different studies Harkness et al, 1995;Harkness, Bagby, Levitt, & Joffe, 2002b;Miller, Kaloupek, Dillon, & Keane, 2004b;Quilty & Bagby, in press;Sharpe & Desai 2001;Trull et al 1995;Vendrig, Derksen, & de Mey 2000;Wygant et al, 2006).…”

“…Several studies have indicated that this scale clearly has a dispositional component, as evidenced by large correlations with temperament domains such as Neuroticism and Negative Emotionality (Sellbom & Ben-Porath, 2005 ;Sellbom, Ben-Porath, & Bagby, 2008b ;Simms, Casillas, Clark, Watson, & Doebbeling, 2005 ) , which makes it similar to the PSY-5 NEGE scale (e.g., Bagby, Sellbom, Costa, & Widiger, 2008 ;Harkness, McNulty, Ben-Porath, & Graham, 2002 ) . Several studies have also found that RC7 and NEGE are substantially correlated with symptom inventories or therapist symptom ratings (e.g., Arbisi, Sellbom, & Ben-Porath, 2008 ;Forbey & Ben-Porath, 2008 ;Harkness et al, 2002 ;Sellbom, Ben-Porath, & Bagby, 2008a ) and trait measures of general anxiety (Egger, De May, Derksen, & van der Staak, 2003 ;Forbey & Ben-Porath, 2008 ;Harkness et al, 1995 ;Sellbom et al, 2008b ;Trull, Useda, Costa, & McCrae, 1995 ) . Thus, when RC7 and/ or NEGE are elevated in an MMPI-2 protocol, the individual is very likely to be prone to experience a wide range of negative emotions including anxiety, anger, guilt, and fear.…”

Dit is niet juist.…”
