Cross-Cultural Comparison of Personality Traits, Attachment Security, and Satisfaction With Relationships as Predictors of Subjective Well-Being in India, Sweden, and the United States

Abstract: Personality traits like Neuroticism and Extroversion, Satisfaction With Relationships, and Attachment Security are among the most important predictors of subjective well-being (SWB). However, the relative contribution of these predictors to SWB is seldom tested, and even more rarely tested cross-culturally. In this study, we replicate and extend Galinha, Oishi, Pereira, Wirtz, and Esteves, aiming to identify the strongest predictors of SWB, and in what way that contribution is universal or culture-specific, ac… Show more

“…These findings confirm previous literature suggesting wealth and personal relationships are the most powerful predictors of SWB (Cummins, 2000(Cummins, , 2010(Cummins, , 2019Tomyn et al, 2017). A study conducted by Galinha, Garcia-Martin, Oishi, Wirtz, and Esteves (2016) found that satisfaction with relationships is a significant predictor of SWB in India. These predictors help victims to deal with the external adversities in the wake of such recurrent flood events.…”

“…As a second limitation of our study, we point at the potential influence of cultural norms on ending social relations. Comparative research on ideas and attitudes towards social relations points, for instance, at cultures in which saving face and upholding good face to face relations ships (no matter what) is an important value (Argyle et al , 1986; Galinha et al , 2016). These differences between cultures may have important consequences for the generalization of our findings on social tie deletion, in particular our findings on deleting private ties.…”
