Background: Hearing loss(HL) among adults is one of the most common chronic illnesses worldwide Quality of life(QoL) might be affected if hearing loss is severe, usually causes difficulty in communication , affects cognitive, emotional status; and increased morbidity and mortality. The prevalence of hearing loss is growing because of increasing exposure to excessive noise, increased life expectancy, smoking, cardiovascular risks and infection. Objectives: This study aims to assess the quality of life (QoL) of hearing loss in outpatient clinics in Ain Shams University Hospitals and to recognize the factors which might affect the quality of life (QoL) in patients with hearing loss. Methods: This study is a cross sectional study. It was conducted from February 2018 to July 2018 on 311 patients with hearing loss attending audiology clinics located in Ain Shams University hospital. Data were collected using an interviewed questionnaire. Results: Out of 311 interviewed participants, (52.1%) were females, (24.1%) of the participants were between 18-29 years. Inflammation was found to be the main cause of hearing loss in 40% of the studied population.The environmental domain is the most affected QoL domain with the participants' hearing loss (Mean ± S.D =56.1+11.4) with statistical significant effect of using hearing aids on QoL improvement.Conclusion: Screening high risk group of hearing impairment must be a crucial task in primary health centers activities for early diagnosis and intervention to prevent hearing loss and thus maintain good QoL in adults.

“…The short form of the HHIE, denoted the HHIE-S, has been translated to many different languages and has been used in several studies ( Chang, Tseng, Chao, Hsu, & Liu, 2008 ; Lichtenstein, Bess, & Logan, 1988 ; Mulrow, Tuley, & Aguilar, 1990 ; Tomioka et al., 2013 ; Ventry & Weinstein, 1983 ; Vuorialho, Karinen, & Sorri, 2006 ; Weinstein, 1986 , 1991 ). This questionnaire has been found to have high internal consistency reliability (Cronbach’s alpha .87–.91) and high test–retest consistency for different languages ( r = .84–.98; Tomioka et al., 2013 ; Weinstein, 1986 ; Weinstein, Rasheedy, Taha, & Fatouh, 2015 ). Self-reports of subjective hearing difficulties by people with hearing loss may be a useful complement to audiometry in hearing aid rehabilitation. To be useful, such self-reports need to be reliable. This study investigated the reliability and the validity of the Swedish Hearing Handicap Inventory for the Elderly (Screening Version; HHIE-S). Sixty-nine participants completed a questionnaire before hearing aid rehabilitation. Of these individuals, 49 completed hearing aid rehabilitation (aged between 23 and 94 years), and 41 of these 49 participants completed the questionnaire after completing the rehabilitation. The Swedish HHIE-S exhibited good internal consistency (Cronbach’s alpha coefficient of .77). The questionnaire was effective for evaluating hearing aid rehabilitation, and a statistically significant reduction in hearing difficulties was observed. The clinicians found the questionnaire easy to administer and effective in hearing aid rehabilitation. The findings from the study support the use of the HHIE-S in clinical practice.

Objectives: To raise awareness and propose a good practice guide for translating and adapting any hearing-related questionnaire to be used for comparisons across populations divided by language or culture, and to encourage investigators to publish detailed steps. Design: From a synthesis of existing guidelines, we propose important considerations for getting started, followed by six early steps: (1) Preparation, (2, 3) Translation steps, (4) Committee Review, (5) Field testing and (6) Reviewing and finalising the translation. Study sample: Not applicable. Results: Across these six steps, 22 different items are specified for creating a questionnaire that promotes equivalence to the original by accounting for any cultural differences. Published examples illustrate how these steps have been implemented and reported, with shared experiences from the authors, members of the International Collegium of Rehabilitative Audiology and TINnitus research NETwork. Conclusions: A checklist of the preferred reporting items is included to help researchers and clinicians make informed choices about conducting or omitting any items. We also recommend using the checklist to document these decisions in any resulting report or publication. Following this step-by-step guide would promote quality assurance in multinational trials and outcome evaluations but, to confirm functional equivalence, large-scale evaluation of psychometric properties should follow.
