Cross-cultural adaptation and validation of the Dutch language version of the Pictorial Fear of Activity Scale – Cervical

Abstract: Background The Pictorial Fear of Activity Scale-Cervical (PFActS-C) is a reliable and valid instrument to assess fear of movement in people with whiplash associated disorders. It is not available in Dutch and has not been evaluated in other neck pain populations. This study aimed to systematically translate the PFActS-C into Dutch and evaluate the psychometric properties of this Dutch Language Version (DLV) in people with non-specific neck pain. Met… Show more

“…Mean TSK and FABQ pa scores in the ‘fear group’ were close to the cut-off points to be considered fearful. People in the ‘fear group’ experienced mild/moderate fear, which is typical for people with neck pain in a primary care setting [ 59 ]. The results of our exploratory analysis, in which we increased the contrast between the groups by comparing participants who scored positive on both scales (N = 10: TSK≤37 & FABQ pa ≤14) with people with ‘no fear’ (N = 46), confirmed the impact of fear as the effect size was twice as large.…”

“…The Neckpix is a reliable pictorial scale to measure fear of movement in people with chronic neck pain consisting of a specific set of 10 daily activities on a 11-point NRS scale, with higher scores representing higher fear. This scale has a strong correlation with the Tampa Scale for Kinesiophobia [ 45 ], is region-specific and easy to understand due to the use of pictures [ 51 , 52 ]. The PSFS is the recommended tool in neck pain guidelines that tries to quantify a patient’s disabilities in daily functioning on an 11-point NRS scale [ 53 – 55 ].…”

“…51,74 The PFActS-C is a valid 77-item questionnaire and has shown to be moderately to largely correlated with measures of pain-related fear and anxiety (PASS-20), catastrophizing cognitions (PCS), and disability (NDI). 34,74 For the current fMRI paradigm, 15 PFActS-C pictures were selected across 3 categories (ie, 5 pictures per category) to elicit different degrees of pain-related fear among participants with CWAD (ie, high-fear, moderate-fear, and neutral pictures; see Fig. 1), based on the validation results for the PFActS-C in individuals with WAD (see Turk et al 74 for further details).…”
