Abstract:In the coming decades, Sub-Saharan Africa (SSA) faces challenges to sustainably increase food production while keeping pace with continued population growth. Conservation agriculture (CA) has been proposed to enhance soil health and productivity to respond to this situation. Maize is the main staple food in SSA. To increase maize yields, the selection of suitable genotypes and management practices for CA conditions has been explored using remote sensing tools. They may play a fundamental role towards overcoming the traditional limitations of data collection and processing in large scale phenotyping studies. We present the result of a study in which Red-Green-Blue (RGB) and multispectral indexes were evaluated for assessing maize performance under conventional ploughing (CP) and CA practices. Eight hybrids under different planting densities and tillage practices were tested. The measurements were conducted on seedlings at ground level (0.8 m) and from an unmanned aerial vehicle (UAV) platform (30 m), causing a platform proximity effect on the images resolution that did not have any negative impact on the performance of the indexes. Most of the calculated indexes (Green Area (GA) and Normalized Difference Vegetation Index (NDVI)) were significantly affected by tillage conditions increasing their values from CP to CA. Indexes derived from the RGB-images related to canopy greenness performed better at assessing yield differences, potentially due to the greater resolution of the RGB compared with the multispectral data, although this performance was more precise for CP than CA. The correlations of the multispectral indexes with yield were improved by applying a soil-mask derived from a NDVI threshold with the aim of corresponding pixels with vegetation. The results of this study highlight the applicability of remote sensing approaches based on RGB images to the assessment of crop performance and hybrid choice.

The problems and challenges of rapidly increasing world population, global climate change, shortages of water suitable for irrigation and degradation of agricultural land are increasing the demand to improve grain production from rainfed arable lands. Specific challenges include estimating the size and thus the value of the yield gap, identifying the factors limiting current average production and designing profitable remedial strategies for a range of agro-ecological regions. This review of the rainfall-limited potential yields and the gap between actual or average yields of cereal and legume crops and the rainfall-limited potential indicates that there is still substantial room to increase the average yield of crops in rainfed systems in both developed and developing regions. The review has indicated that (1) the size of the gap between average and potential yields varies according to the agro-ecological zone and the available technologies from about 0.5 to over 5 t/ha, leaving considerable scope for future yield improvement; (2) there is relatively less information applicable at the farm or field scale that assesses the spatial and temporal variability of the yield gap, the reasons for the gap and the possible methods to close the gap; (3) there is also limited information on the feasibility and profitability of applying various approaches to close the gap, including tactical and strategic management practices and plant breeding; (4) the evidence of the impact of the components of conservation agriculture on crop yields in a wide range of agro-ecological regions supports the adoption of zero tillage and crop rotation but is less clear in support of residue retention; (5) objective identification and testing of factors that limit production can lead to a rational sequence of amelioration that is specific to each agro-ecological or field situation and can close the yield gap in winter-dominant rainfall environments; and (6) farmerparticipatory varietal selection, including breeding for specific adaptation can make a substantial contribution to closing the gap in a range of environments. A common observation from the reports reviewed here is that sustainable yield improvement will need to employ a range of methods that are appropriate to specific agro-ecological conditions-previous approaches based on single inputs, practices or genotypes can only be partial solutions.

Transplanting of rice seedlings in non-puddled soil under conservation agriculture systems is a new promising technology for which effective and economic weed control strategies have to develop. Therefore, a study was conducted in wet season rice during 2013 and 2014 with some commonly used pre-and post-emergence rice herbicides (pyrazosulfuron-ethyl, butachlor, orthosulfamuron, acetochlor + bensulfuron methyl, butachlor + propanil and 2,4-D amine) in strip tilled non-puddled field condition at Mymensingh, Bangladesh to evaluate their weed control efficacy singly or in sequences, their cost-effectiveness and residual effect on the succeeding crops like wheat and lentil. Sole application of herbicide was less effective to control all types of weed species than sequentially applied herbicides. Sequential application of pre-and late post-emergence, early post-and late post-emergence or pre-, early and late post-emergence herbicides controlled weeds by 46-98% and 43-95%, respectively in terms of weed density and biomass. Sequential application of pyrazosulfuron-ethyl followed by orthosulfamuron and butachlor + propanil provided the most effective and economic weed control under this new rice establishment practice. Moreover, the study suggested a range of effective herbicides for strip-tilled non-puddled wet season rice, but possible rotation of those herbicides in a sequential application is needed. Additionally, residue of those herbicides did not show any adverse effect on the succeeding crops of rice like wheat and lentil. However, further research is needed with various new molecules of herbicide and their residual effect on the subsequent crop as well as soil environment.
