Cronbach's alpha reliability: Interval estimation, hypothesis testing, and sample size planning

Abstract: Cronbach's alpha is one of the most widely used measures of reliability in the social and organizational sciences. Current practice is to report the sample value of Cronbach's alpha reliability, but a confidence interval for the population reliability value also should be reported. The traditional confidence interval for the population value of Cronbach's alpha makes an unnecessarily restrictive assumption that the multiple measurements have equal variances and equal covariances. We propose a confidence interv… Show more

“…For composite reliability, the indicators had different loadings for all items greater than 0.7, and if the indicators are greater than 0.7, they can be considered reliable [62]. Convergent validity signifies that a set of indicators represents one and the same underlying construct, which can be demonstrated through its unidimensionality, and the average variance extracted (AVE) value for all items is more than 0.5, which indicates sufficient convergent validity [63] (see Table 2). As shown in Table 3, the cross loading values are less than the outer loadings, which infers good discriminant validity.…”

“…Reliability Analysis Cronbach's alpha is a measure of internal consistency, that is, how closely related a set of items are as a group [15]. It also is as a coefficient of reliability or consistency to be a measure of scale reliability.…”

“…5 Considering the modified Toyama method resulting in 1 question with 3 options (lordotic, straight, or kyphotic) and assuming an expected intrarater reliability of at least 0.8, a = 0.05, and a power of 80%, the sample size needed would be 21. Of note, the power of the results in a group of 276 is 100%.…”
