“…The sex-related differences in liver mass and hepatosomatic index can be explained by the maturation stage of chubs. Considering vitellogenesis, the liver of females is stimulated to produce vitellogenin that increases the liver mass by the proliferation of endoplasmatic reticulum and Golgi apparatus in hepatocytes (Rinchard et al 1998;Mayon et al 2006). In native fish population gender dependent MT concentrations are hard to distinguish (Linde et al 1999), but still our data in Table 4 indicate that average concentrations of MT are significantly higher in females caught during the reproductive period compared to females from the nonreproductive period; 24% increase in average MT concentration could be interpreted as indicating the beginning of sexual maturation of female specimens (Olsson et al 1987;Thompson et al 2003) that are prevailing in our study (∼60%).…”

“…It has been shown that the increase of liver weight is caused by the proliferation of endoplasmic reticulum and Golgi apparatus in hepatocytes (Rinchard et al, 1998). As sampling took place during the early spawning season of chub, female fish were still in vitellogenesis and therefore displayed higher LSI than males.…”

“…This fecundity is higher than that determined on the coasts of the Central-Western Indian Ocean (between 140,000 and 550,000 oocytes) [35] . However, it is lower than those obtained in Mexico (between 45,022 and 1930,245 oocytes) [7] , in the Mediterranean (between 385,000 and 1134,500 oocytes) [33] , in the Central-Western Atlantic Ocean (between 58,000 and 1,500,000 oocytes) [36] The variation in the fecundity value would be due to the environmental factors of the environment which would influence oocyte development. According to Le Bec [20] , the difference between the values is linked to variations in abiotic factors such as temperature and salinity or to biotic factors which condition fertility.…”
