Crohn's disease and vitamin B12 metabolism

Abstract: The concentrations of vitamin B12, its analogs, and the haptocorrin and transcobalamin carriers in 21 patients suffering from Crohn's disease and a group of controls (20 adults) were measured. There were no significant differences in the mean values for vitamin B12, total corrinoids (vitamin B12 + analogs), or vitamin B12 or total corrinoids bound to haptocorrin or transcobalamin of the Crohn's and control patients. There was a significant increase in the binding capacity of transcobalamin in the Crohn's patie… Show more

“…Among the 12 studies, the folate concentration in the study by Kuroki et al [24] was excluded because it was detected in red blood cells. Folate and vitamin B12 were detected via chemiluminescence immunoassays in three studies [15,22,28], radioimmunoassays in four studies [23,24,25,30], ELISA in two studies [26,31], a specific immunochemical method in one study [29], and the IMx assay in one study [16]. Three studies did not include the mean age of patients and controls [15,16,23], and one study included the median age of patients and controls [23].…”

“…In relation to the history intake due to malaise and anorexia, the excessive nutrient requirement due to bowel inflammation and the sulfasalaof thrombosis, only 1 of 4 patients with a history of thromboembolic events had the factor V Leiden muta-zine-induced folate malabsorption. The cobalamin status in IBD patients has been reported as either low [73] or tion, but the prevalence of this mutation in patients with thromboembolism (25%) was significantly higher than in normal [74].…”
