Critical roles of Mn-ions in enhancing the insulation, piezoelectricity and multiferroicity of BiFeO3-based lead-free high temperature ceramics

Abstract: A lead-free multiferroic ceramic of BiFe0.96Sc0.04O3–BaTiO3 is a type of ABO3 perovskite structure, belonging to the R3c space group, but exhibiting poor insulation and weak multiferroicity.

“…The corresponding reaction is written asHence a straightforward way to reduce the leakage current is to inhibit the Fe 3+ -to-Fe 2+ transition, which has been proved effective in BFO-based ceramics with partially substitution of analogous ions (such as Ti, Mn, Co, and Al etc.) at Fe sites 49,52 or BFO-ABO 3 (such as PbTiO 3 and BTO) solid solutions 53,54 . In the BFSTO system, we reveal that the Fe 3+ -to-Fe 2+ transition is also suppressed by the incorporation of STO.…”

“…10 Previous investigations have shown that doping with rare-earth, alkaline-earth and transition elements modify spiral spin structure and also reduce leakage current which results in improved magnetic as well as ferroelectric properties. 8,14,15 Besides, recent investigations have demonstrated enhanced magnetization in BFO nanostructures with sizes less than 62 nm by virtue of its modified spiral spin structure. [11][12][13] The effect of doping concentration on multiferroic properties of both bulk and nanocrystalline Ba-doped BFO ceramic materials were reported in Refs.…”
