This study aims to illustrate and describe new literacy and critical thinking to support students' vocational development. This is a quantitative descriptive study using a survey approach. The number of respondents was 122 people. The questionnaire was developed to measure student’s new literacy and critical thinking. The data analysis technique used was a statistic descriptive method. The results showed: (1) the circulation of information in social media among students is very intensive, (2) the intensification of information on social media encourages students to improve the literacy model in the form of new literacy movements, (3) new literacy encourages the improvement of students’ critical thinking, (4) new literacy and critical thinking interact with each other to foster students' vocational development, especially in the formation of soft skills and (5) soft skills related to new literacy and critical thinking, namely, how to obtain, use and disseminate information. Future research requires equity related to the circulation model that can help students predict future needs. Keywords: New literacy, critical thinking, development, vocational.

ResumenExiste gran interés en el diseño de entornos de aprendizaje del inglés como lengua extranjera que fomenten el desarrollo del pensamiento crítico. Para ello es necesario comprender la naturaleza de las relaciones entre los elementos que se conjugan en el quehacer educativo. En este sentido, el presente estudio busca determinar la relación entre las habilidades para el pensamiento crítico (HPC) y la comprensión de la lectura (CL) de textos científico-técnicos en inglés, de un grupo de estudiantes de inglés como lengua extranjera de la Universidad Simón Bolívar, Venezuela. Es un estudio exploratorio enmarcado en el paradigma cuantitativo, ex post facto, con diseño transversal. Se utilizó el The Ennis-Weir Critical Thinking Essay Test para medir las HPC y la prueba de logro de CL departamental para la competencia lingüística. Los resultados muestran que la relación entre las HPC y la CL es baja, positiva y significativa. También se evidenció un desempeño muy bajo tanto en las HPC como en la CL. Los hallazgos sugieren que la lectura es una herramienta útil para fomentar las HPC; no obstante, el curso debe ser afinado para mejorar su efectividad. Se discuten implicaciones pedagógicas de los resultados y se ofrecen sugerencias para futuras investigaciones.Palabras clave: pensamiento crítico, comprensión de lectura, enseñanza-aprendizaje del inglés como lengua extranjera, Ennis-Weir Critical Thinking Essay Test. AbstractThere is great interest in designing English-as-a-foreign-language learning environments to foster critical thinking. Critical thinking in the education of Indonesia has not been well socialized; students also tend to accept information without evaluating it first and change ideas uncritically. This case is very detrimental. Therefore, teacher plays an important role in developing stu- dents' critical thinking and critical reading ability. The puropse of this study is to find out teachers' strategies in improving students' critical thinking and critical reading ability. This study used qualitative research design, interview and questionaire was used asa research instruments in this study. The results of this study shows strategies used by the teacher are asking open-ended questions, restate and clarify the meaning of a few sentences from the text, and use small group discussions with specific tasks assigned. In short, the teachers' understanding of critical reading and critical thinking is low, their strategy in improving students' critical reading is also limited.
