Critical Nostalgia and Material Culture in Northern Ireland

Abstract: Although many scholars have characterized nostalgia as a counterproductive modern malaise, members of one Northern Irish community demonstrate that nostalgia can be essential for evaluating the present through contrast with the past and for reasserting the ideal of community in the midst of sectarian division. By preserving and displaying local material culture of the past, Catholics and Protestants alike grant seemingly obsolete objects new life as symbols necessary for inspiring critical thought that may lea… Show more

“…Folklorist Ray Cashman (2006) argues that in the villages of Northern Ireland, material culture such as old amateur museum collections of individual villagers, commemorative traditions related to certain sites, and the display of agricultural machines and tools enunciates critical nostalgia. According to him, the outsider's first indications of a nostalgic mood are more visual than verbal (ibid.…”

“…More specifically, Groote and Haartsen (2012, 183) point out that little attention has been given to the implications of lay discourses of heritage. These themes have been examined recently by Schofield (2014, 2), amongst others, who advocates 'a new approach to cultural heritage, one that is participatory, bottom-up and fundamentally grounded in local concerns and interests' (see also Cashman 2006;Smith and Waterton 2009;Robertson 2012;Bonnett and Alexander 2013). This paper seeks to contribute to these debates through a bottom-up perspective of conservation planning in Ireland, examining the role of lay discourses of built heritage, and their inter-relationship with the authorised heritage discourse.…”
