Critical Factors and Guidelines for 3D Surveying and Modelling in Cultural Heritage

Abstract: Abstract:The 3D digitization of sites or objects, normally referred to "realitybased 3D surveying and modelling", is based on 3D optical instruments able to deliver accurate, detailed and realistic 3D results. Nowadays many non-experts are facing the 3D world and its technologies (hardware and software) due to their easiness of use but a not correct use leads to wrong results and conclusions. The goal of the article is to critically report the 3D digitization pipeline with some Cultural Heritage examples.Based… Show more

“…When a proper acquisition planning and execution is carried out, the two techniques are able to provide high quality results (Beraldin et al, 2011;Douglass et al, 2015;Remondino, 2011). Critical and limiting factors that may negatively affect the produced outcomes have been deeply investigated (Barsanti et al, 2014;Menna et al, 2016;Remondino et al, 2013). To overcome their individual weakness, it is common practice to integrate the two approaches Guidi et al, 2009;Lerma et al, 2010;Nex and Rinaudo, 2011).…”

“…However, a more practical classification of UAV types based on their physical structure can also be derived from these broad categorizations which divides it into three main categories (Achille et al, 2015;Nex and Remondino, 2014 (Barsanti et al, 2014;Grenzdörffer et al, 2015).…”

“…Indeed, a detailed 3D reconstruction of heritage objects is necessary for further analysis and interpretations, and eventually physical reconstruction (Barsanti et al, 2014). In this regard, the 3D laser scanner and the photogrammetric method are examples of the techniques often employed to perform this task (Grenzdörffer et al, 2015;Lerma et al, 2010;Remondino, 2011), even though other alternatives such as 3D cameras also exist (Lachat et al, 2016).…”
