Critical analysis and systematization of rat pancreatectomy terminology

Abstract: PURPOSE:To critically analyze and standardize the rat pancreatectomy nomenclature variants. METHODS: RESULTS:Among the 468, the main objectives were to surgically induce diabetes and to study the genes regulations and expressions.Five rat pancreatectomy technique references received 15 or more citations. Twenty different terminologies were identified for the pancreas resection: according to the resected parenchyma percentage (30 to 95%); to the procedure type (total, subtotal and partial); or based on the sel… Show more

“…The percentage of animals induced into diabetic status after an intravenous streptozotocin injection is higher than with the use of alloxan. In this study, there was a 100% success rate in inducing diabetes 24 hours after the intravenous STZ injection [9][10][11] .…”

“…One possibility are genetically modified animals (WDF / TA-FA, Zucker) that can be adopted as models of diabetes-associated with metabolic syndrome. 9 Although the model is valid, there are high costs and reproducibility is difficult.…”

“…The laparoscopy causes less trauma 13 , postoperative pain 14 , dehydration due to exposure of loops 15 , and often with fewer postoperative complications. The distal pancreatectomy with splenectomy technique in rats was not found in the literature 16 .…”

“…The use of STZ in this context is however suboptimal, since the toxin also has the potential to induce direct nephrotoxic and cardiotoxic effects, independent of hyperglycemia 24 26 . Pancreatectomy (Px), on the other hand, is a well-characterized method of surgically inducing diabetes in rats 27 . An important advantage of this model is that it reflects the isolated effects of a reduced beta cell mass; immediately after surgery Px rats become insulin deficient and hyperglycemic, allowing full control of diabetic onset 28 .…”
