Crime and the Economy in Mexican States: Heterogeneous Panel Estimates (1993-2012)

Abstract: This paper studies the transmission of crime shocks to the economy in a sample of 32 Mexican states over the period from 1993 to 2012. The paper uses a panel structural VAR approach which accounts for the heterogeneity of the dynamic state level responses in GDP, FDI and international migration flows, and measures the transmission via the impulse response of homicide rates. The approach also allows the study of the pattern of economic responses among states. In particular, the percentage of GDP devoted to new … Show more

“…Distractions of governments from their substantive functions -promoting economic activity -to prosecute crime is another negative consequence of the proliferation of crime in national life (World Bank, 2011). Verdugo-Yepes et al (2015) confirm that a crime shock induces a fall of 0.5% in different GDP per capita Mexican states.…”

“…A few studies have attempted to quantify the impact of crime on FDI inflows aggregated across sectors. Some researchers find that high levels of certain crimes act as a deterrent for foreign investments (Brock, ; Rojas, 2009; Detotto and Otranto, ; Daniele and Marani, ; Zelekha and Bar‐Efrat, ; Pan et al., 2012; Helmy, ; Ashby and Ramos, ; Pinotti, ; Verdugo‐Yepes, Pedroni, and Hu, ; Brown and Hibbert, ). Others have argued there is a “threshold” beyond which the negative effects occur.…”

“…Despite a recent structural reform agenda implemented in Mexico to curb criminal activities, the homicide rate still reached a high of 21.8 per 100,000 inhabitants in 2012 (Verdugo‐Yepes, Pedroni, and Hu, ). In, contrast, Iceland records on average less than 1 per 100,000 inhabitants.…”
