Creation of a caecostoma in mice as a model of an enterocutaneous fistula

Abstract: In the past, physiological, oncological and pharmaceutical investigations led to the development of different models of enterocutaneous fistulas. For a few years, fistula models were also created to investigate the efficacy of minimal invasive therapies in closing these fistulas. As most experimental surgical procedures are difficult to perform and are often combined with a high mortality or spontaneous closure rate, a new model in mice was developed with the aim of avoiding these disadvantages. Twenty mice, d… Show more

“…Animals underwent a surgical cecostoma communicating the cecum and the skin under isoflurane anesthesia (Baxter, Maurepas, France) using a SZX10 stereomicroscope (Olympus France SAS, Rungis, France). The cecostoma was performed according the model described by Bultmann and colleagues and this choice was based on the report of no spontaneous stoma closure even four months after surgery 31 . After a midline laparotomy of 1 cm, the distal part of the cecum was passed through the abdominal muscle and the subcutaneous space, forming a 1-cm-long tract, and then attached to the skin.…”

“…A surgical cecostomy was performed according the model described by Bültmann and colleagues. 53 Rats were placed in supine position, feet spread apart and their abdomen was shaved. After a midline laparotomy of 3 cm, the distal part of the cecum was passed with a staggered opening through the abdominal muscle and the subcutaneous space, forming a 10 mm-long tract.…”

“…Ryska et al (12) studied rats using a modified cecal anastomosis described by Bültmann et al (13). Ryska et al (12) performed the following operations on rats: The animals underwent a short (2-2.5 cm) median laparotomy following back fixation.…”
