Creation of 3D terahertz photonic crystals by the direct writing technique with a TiO2 sol‐gel ink

Abstract: Three-dimensional TiO 2 woodpile terahertz photonic crystals with feature size less than 100 lm were created by the direct writing technique with a TiO 2 sol-gel ink. With proper heat treatment, the rheological properties of the TiO 2 sol-gel ink were modulated to meet the requirement to construct 3D-TPCs with feature size less than 100 lm by the direct writing technique. Well-crystallized rutile TiO 2 3D-TPCs were obtained by the calcination process to provide the required high refractive indices, while the la… Show more

“…Based on the hydrolysis of titanium diisopropoxide bis(acetylacetonate) (TIA), the TiO 2 sol‐gel ink was synthesized according to previous reports . In brief, 0.62 g of polyvinylpyrrolidone (PVP) (Mw = 55 000; Sigma‐Aldrich Corporation, St. Louis, MO) and 12.56 mL of TIA (75 wt% in 2‐propanol; Sigma‐Aldrich Corporation) were dissolved in 8 mL of absolute ethanol (EtOH; Sinopharm Chemical Reagent Co., Ld., Shanghai, China).…”

“…In either case, DIW resolution is typically comparable to the nozzle diameter, restricting feature sizes of this technique to around one micron [160]. Nevertheless, DIW has excellent material compatibility and has been demonstrated with a wide array of materials including metals [150,[161][162][163][164], ceramics [165][166][167], polymers [160,168,169], and even biological media [170,171].…”

“…Gratson et al used a polymer ink composed of polyethylenimine and polyacrilic acid and 1 μm diameter glass nozzle to form a woodpile structure via DIW [160]. Wang et al used a TiO 2 sol-gel ink and 60 μm nozzle in order to create woodpile PCs operating in the terahertz frequency range [165]. Zhu et al fabricated woodpile PCs for application at terahertz frequencies, but used a barium titanate (BaTiO 3 ) ink embedded in PDMS, with nozzle diameter of 180 μm [166].…”

“…Titanium dioxide (TiO 2 ), as a multifunctional semiconducting metal oxide material, holds great potential in many applications, especially for energy and environmental applications, due to its excellent optical and electrical properties, high photocatalytic activity, biocompatibility, environmental stability, and low cost . In recent years, 3D printing of TiO 2 structures has been demonstrated using sol‐gel‐based inks . However, the requirement for expensive metal alkoxide precursors and the tedious preparation process limit the throughput of 3D‐printable sol–gel ink, which hinders practical applications.…”
