Creation and Detection of Vector Vortex Modes for Classical and Quantum Communication

Abstract: Vector vortex beams are structured states of light that are non-separable in their polarisation and spatial mode, they are eigenmodes of free-space and many fibre systems, and have the capacity to be used as a modal basis for both classical and quantum communication. Here we outline recent progress in our understanding of these modes, from their creation to their characterization and detection. We then use these tools to study the propagation behaviour of such modes in free-space and optical fibre and show tha… Show more

“…Although the scheme we present is filter based, i.e. filtering states one at a time, the experiment can be performed robustly and more efficiently using a deterministic detector for spin-orbit coupled states, sorting the modes in position [23]. This ensures high detection rates.…”

“…Due to their distinctive polarization distributions, VV beams have shown unique features, making them appealing for different research purposes, e.g. microscopy [54], optical trapping [55,56], metrology [57,58], nanophotonics [59] and communication [60][61][62][63][64][65][66][67]. Formally, the state |R, (|L, ) describes a photon with uniform right (left) circular polarization carrying of OAM, and a VV beam can be conveniently described by a non-separable superposition of polarization-OAM eigenmodes.…”
