ObjectiveThis scoping review identified the emerging and evolving roles of health information professionals (HIPs) in a range of tasks and settings, as they adapt to varied user needs, while keeping up with changing medical landscapes to provide evidence-based information support in grand rounds and scholarly research. The review aims to inform library school students about expected entry-level job qualifications and faculty about adaptable changes to specialized HIP curricula.MethodsThe authors examined 268 peer-reviewed journal articles that concentrated on evolving HIP roles, professional settings, and contexts by retrieving results from several multidisciplinary databases.ResultsHIPs, who generally serve as “embedded librarians,” are taking on more active roles as collaborators, research experts, and liaisons, replacing more passive and exclusive roles as information providers and outreach agents or research assistants. These evolving roles in the reviewed literature were broken into nine categories in approximate order of prominence.ConclusionsA new model linking these evolving roles to the Medical Library Association (MLA) fundamental professional competencies was developed to provide an operational examination and research-based evidence for adapting HIP continuing education curriculum learning outcomes, course content and delivery, and student career pathways for existing graduate HIP specialization courses in library programs. The model indicates each role’s connection to the MLA professional competencies, based on MLA’s detailed description of each competency. A better understanding of HIP demands and expectations will enhance the capacity of library programs to prepare students in HIP specializations.

This article focused a selective review of literature on the role of libraries on educational; social & cultural; economical and political development under the title ‘A selective Review of Literature on Social Contribution of Libraries’. Libraries are changing their nature in the modern age and they offer their services to the user from various requirements of them and play a very important role in society. The library is considered as the heart of an educational institution as well as plays a role as the backbone of an educational institution. And also by offering various services, these libraries added value to education, social & cultural, economic, and political development. In this paper, the literature published on the social contribution of libraries is studied, analysed and, explained. The social contribution of libraries is crucial in the educational, social & cultural, economic and, political development of the nation. From this article scholars and researchers can understand how libraries play the important role in society and also aware of the literature available in this area.

With the aim of informing specialized graduate curriculum development, this two-phase study seeks to identify and bridge gaps in expectation and preparation between and among employers of health information professionals (HIPs), aspiring HIPs, and library and information science (LIS) graduate curricula. Building upon a scoping review of emerging HIP professional roles, an online survey further explored what professional competencies and qualifications employers in various health information organizations expected or desired of entry-level HIPs. The integrated findings of these two phases revealed that the training that HIPs receive in LIS graduate programs may not accurately reflect employers’ priorities and expectations: While research and professional associations identified the same general skill sets as important, employers also valued competencies such as instructional experience, web skills, “soft” and interpersonal skills, and particular subsets of discipline-specific knowledge as well as a foundation in the complex professional contexts that characterize health-sciences workplaces. These results indicate ways in which LIS programs might develop, adapt, and expand specialized graduate curricula and dynamic professionalization opportunities for students in order to better align learning outcomes with professional core competencies and employer expectations, and to better prepare students for both the technical and interpersonal demands of the job field.
