Creating a literature database of low-calorie sweeteners and health studies: evidence mapping

Abstract: BackgroundEvidence mapping is an emerging tool used to systematically identify, organize and summarize the quantity and focus of scientific evidence on a broad topic, but there are currently no methodological standards. Using the topic of low-calorie sweeteners (LCS) and selected health outcomes, we describe the process of creating an evidence-map database and demonstrate several example descriptive analyses using this database.MethodsThe process of creating an evidence-map database is described in detail. “…For this reason, full passive range of motion is reported as a precondition for the diagnosis of a rotator cuff tear [42, 60]. Our findings support this clinical construct indicating that those with more than 30° restriction of external rotation (performed in neutral) were 7 times less likely to have SAP (sensitivity 99%) and had a higher prevalence of glenohumeral joint arthropathy on x-ray.…”

“…Once we determined the commonly promoted phenomenological research standards, in Phase 2 we engaged in journal selection and evidence mapping (Wang, Shams‐White, Bright, Parrott, & Chung, ) of the existing professional counseling literature to ascertain what phenomenological standards and practices are being employed in professional counseling. First, we undertook a 15‐year (2001–2015) review of the 10 journals published by the American Counseling Association to determine an initial understanding of the number of articles published per journal where researchers used phenomenological methodology.…”

“…The veritas plot is a tool to compare several studies or study subgroups with respect to five different dimensions of relevance arranged in a pentagon (such as between-study heterogeneity, publication bias, evidence and quality gradings) [75]. Specialized displays to visualize the qualitative evidence and characteristics of a potentially diverse set of studies are the harvest plot [24], the error matrix display [76], the effect-direction plot [77], and the evidence-map bubble display [78].…”
