Craniofacial Resection for Malignant Melanoma of the Skull Base

Abstract: Objective: To report postoperative mortality, complications, and outcomes in a subset of patients with the histologic diagnosis of malignant melanoma extracted from an existing database of a large cohort of patients accumulated from multiple institutions. Design: Retrospective outcome analysis. Setting: Seventeen international tertiary referral centers performing craniofacial surgery for malignant skull base tumors. Patients: A total of 53 patients were identified from a database of 1307 patients who had crani… Show more

“…A meta-analysis from 2012 could not reveal higher survival rates 437 . Other study results confirm an increased 3-year survival rate from 18 to 30% as well as a reduced local recurrence rate after postoperative radiotherapy 438 439 . Treatment with anti-PD-1 antibodies as well as anti-CTLA-4 antibodies show promising results in advanced or metastasized mucosal melanomas, however, the evidence is too low to justify their clinical application 436 440 .…”

“…To date, the best outcome studies of these tumours are from the International Collaborative Study, which published their results most recently in 2006 (1,3,17,18). In this multicentre case series, in which our institution was included, data from 1307 patients were acquired retrospectively.…”

“…The results of skull base resection for mucosal malignant melanoma have been very poor [9]. Also, while good local control can be obtained with carbon ion radiotherapy, distant metastasis reduces survival rates [10].…”
