Cranial base chordoma – long term outcome and review of the literature

Abstract: IR and/or SRS provided results comparable with proton beam or heavy particle therapy in our series of cranial base chordomas probably because the radiation field must have covered the target of the tumour volume sufficiently, and reduction of gross tumour volume reduced the target size for radiotherapy. Pursuit of further effective combinations of IR and stereotactic radiotherapy (SRS, proton beam, heavy particle) after tangible resection, especially for residual and recurrent lesions, will be an acceptable fr… Show more

“…In the patients from our previous study, the actual extensive resection rate was 83.3% [8]. Other papers have reported a total or subtotal resection rate ranging from 61.5% to 91.3% [1,14,15,20,21,46,53,54,56,60]. The resection rate of our current study therefore seems favorable in comparison to previous studies.…”

“…Complete resection is the most effective primary treatment and may include soft and hard tissues with 82% survival rate, 22.6-60.3% of morbidity and 2-7.8% of mortality [9,[12][13][14][15][16]. The most common complications are neurologic deficits (13.9%), cerebrospinal fluid fistula and meningitis [12].…”

“…18 Remnants of these notochordal branches that have penetrated these sites presumably provide the seed from which subsequent ectopic chordomas may grow. 19,20 The appearance of chordoma on CT images was that of a well-circumscribed, expansible soft tissue mass that arises from the nasal cavity, with linear calcification in 1 patient. In 4 patients, the lesions showed predominantly lobular morphologic features in the nasopharyngeal area with irregular focal calcification.…”
