Mixed mode brittle fracture behaviour of granite rock is studied experimentally and theoretically using Asymmetric Four Point Bend (AFPB) specimens containing pre-cracks subjected to different mixed mode loading conditions, ranging from pure mode I to pure mode II. The main aim of this paper is twofold. First, to present a complete set of experimental results on fracture of pre-cracked granite samples under various in-plane loading mixities, and second, to predict the fracture loads of the tested rock samples under mixed mode I/II conditions using an energy-based criterion, namely the Average Strain Energy Density (ASED) criterion. Good agreement is found between the experimentally obtained fracture loads and the theoretical predictions based on the constancy of the mean strain energy density over the material volume. It is shown that the ASED criterion is able to provide well predictions for the fracture loads of the investigated rock material containing a pre-crack.

The present paper describes a collection of fracture monitoring cases in different materials. The cases examined include bending of textile reinforced cement (TRC), hybrid concrete-TRC lightweight beams, granite, additive manufacturing metal components, combined loading of human femur bone and pull-out in reinforced concrete. In all cases the basic role is played by acoustic emission (AE). It is shown that certain waveform parameters exhibit strong sensitivity to the rate of fracture as well as the dominant fracture mode. Parameters like frequency content and the duration of the signals supply real time trends that in the present cases are verified by optical techniques. It is concluded that AE supplies important information and allows the prediction of how the material will behave based on the initial AE recordings and before serious damage is inflicted. AE shows a very broad application range; however, the contribution of combination with other techniques is highlighted in order to increase the reliability of the interpretation of AE results.

To explore the development mechanism of cracks in the process of rock failure, triaxial compression tests with simultaneous acoustic emission monitoring were performed on granite specimens using the MTS rock mechanics test system. The frequency-domain information of the acoustic emission signal was obtained by the fast Fourier transform. The Gutenberg–Richter law was used to calculate the acoustic emission signals and obtain the b-value dynamic curve in the loading process. Combined with the stiffness curve of granite specimens and acoustic emission signal in the time domain and frequency domain, the crack development characteristics in different stages were analyzed. The results showed that the acoustic emission signals of granite samples under triaxial compression can be divided into four stages: quiet period 1, active stage 1, quiet period 2, and active stage 2. b-value attained its maximum value in the active phase 2 when it is close to the sample loss, and then drops rapidly, which means the propagation of cracks and the formation of large cracks. The acoustic emission signal’s dominant frequency was not more than 500 kHz, mostly concentrated in the medium-frequency band (100–200 kHz), which accounted for more than 80%. The proportion of signals in each frequency band can reflect the distribution of the three kinds of cracks, while the change in low-frequency signals can reflect the breakthrough of microcracks and the formation time of macrocracks in granite samples. By fully analyzing the characteristics of acoustic emission signals in the time domain and frequency domain, the time and conditions of producing large cracks can be determined accurately and efficiently.
