A bibliometric analysis based on Scopus database was performed to identify the global research trends related to Supported Ionic Liquid Membranes (SILMs) during the time period from 1995 to 2015. This work tries to improve the understanding of the most relevant research topics and applications. The results from the analysis reveal that only after 2005 the research efforts focused on SILMs became significant, since the references found before that year are scarce. The most important research works on the four main application groups for SILMs defined in this work (carbon dioxide separation, other gas phase separations, pervaporation and liquid phase separations) were summarized in this paper. Carbon dioxide separation appeared as the application that has received by far the most attention according to the research trends during the analysed period. Comments about other significant applications that are gaining attention, such as the employment of SILMs in analytical tasks or their consideration for the production of fuel cells, have been included.

The article describes a method for preconcentration and speciation of Cr(III) and Cr(VI) in river waters. It is based on ultrasound-assisted magnetic solid phase extraction employing a nanocomposite prepared from magnetite nanoparticles, manganese oxide and alumina oxide, and then funct i o n a l i z e d w i t h [ 3 -( 2 -am i n oe t h y l a m i n o ) p r o p y l ] trimethoxysilane (AAPTMS). By taking advantage of the oxidative properties of MnO 2 , the Fe 3 O 4 @MnO 2 ,Al 2 O 3 nanocomposite was used for the preconcentration of total chromium. The AAPTMS-modified nanocomposite, in turn, is selective for Cr(VI). The concentration of Cr(III) can be calculated as the difference between total chromium and Cr(VI). The preconcentrated chromium species were quantified using ICP-OES. The method was optimized using response surface methodology. Under optimal conditions, the limit of detection and quantification are 20 and 50 pg ⋅ mL −1 , respectively. The intraday and interday precisions of the method, expressed in terms of relative standard deviation, are 2.6 and 4.9%, respectively. In addition, the effects of potentially interfering ions were examined. The method was successfully applied to the speciation of chromium in spiked river water and a certified reference material.

Chromium(VI) is a well-known hazardous element, thus, its removal from aqueous sources is of a general concern. Among the technologies used for the removal of this type of toxic elements, liquid membranes are gaining in importance and the same has occurred with the use of ionic liquids, considered for many, due to their properties, as green solvents. Thus, the present work joined the three previous points, presenting an experimental study about the removal of chromium(VI) by the use of a liquid membrane operation which used the commercially available Cyphos IL102 ionic liquid as a carrier. The experimental variables included: the stirring speed applied to the feed and receiving solution (a key-parameter to gain maximum transport), acid, chromium(VI), sodium hydroxide and Cyphos IL102 concentrations in their various phases. Additionally, the performance of the present system was evaluated both against the presence of other metals in solution and other carriers. The experimental results confirmed that Cyphos IL102 is a good carrier for chromium(VI) transport and, thus, its removal from aqueous streams, and it also performed well in the presence of accompanying metals and against the performance of other commercially available carriers.
