Coupled finite-discrete element modeling and potential applications in civil engineering

Abstract: Since its appearance at the last of seventy decades, the Discrete Element Modeling (DEM) has been widely used in the modeling of geomaterials but regrettably limited to small scales problems by considering grains interactions. Recently, a new trend has emerged in combining DEM with other methods. The coupled approach allows extending the methods toward a wide range of civil engineering applications. Among them, FEM×DEM coupling has been the topic of research over the past decade. The FEM×DEM coupling has been … Show more

“…One of the ways to express an uncertain measurement is to use the interval quantities, such as [a; b] where a is the lower bound of the quantity and b is its upper bound. With this way of notation, one can conduct interval finite element analysis to have the structural responses [15]. However, for the convenience of this research, according to [16], an uncertain measurement z can be expressed in two parts: the nominal value z and the uncertainty.…”

“…The resolution of this optimization and finite element [31] problems have mainly been discussed in the past and was effectively executed in some software packages. The DACE toolbox [31] in MAT-LAB is chosen to develop our Kriging metamodeling in the current study.…”

“…Modeling the behavior of granular materials is to reflect their physical and mechanical characteristics in an overall response. Several approaches have been proposed in the literature for this purpose, including the Finite Element Method (FEM), Discrete Element Method (DEM), Smoothed-particle hydrodynamics (SPH), or coupling with other methods [8][9][10][11][12][13]. Since its first application in the 1970s, DEM has become a powerful tool for investigating the behavior of granular materials, mainly due to its ability to represent their discrete nature.…”
