County Economy, Population, Construction Land, and Carbon Intensity in a Shrinkage Scenario

Abstract: As the largest ecological background system and basic economic unit in China, counties are of great significance to China’s carbon emission reduction targets. This article conducts theoretical model construction and empirical test research from a contraction perspective, using population and built-up area change as variables and combining indicators of county scale structure in an attempt to find key scale structure elements and representative indicators that affect the carbon emission intensity of counties. “…Therefore, it was very interesting to take this factor into consideration, in order to examine its influence on the intention to continue to use the Metro, which is considered a sustainable travelling mode. The results revealed that social influence had a significant impact on the intention to continue to use the Metro, consistent with prior findings [12,15,[141][142][143][144], where social influence was found to have a significant effect on individual intention behavior. Thus, as the findings emphasized the significant impact of social influence on intention to continue to use the Metro, there is a dire need to organize public service campaigns in order to generate positive word-of-mouth regarding continuing to use the Metro, as eco-friendly public transportation.…”

“…The DEA evaluation system takes the low-carbon management variables and effects as the input and output elements, respectively. In order to determine the county-level low-carbon management variables as input variables, this study refers to the typical variables of low-carbon cities, counties and influencing factors that affect carbon dioxide emissions published in international and Chinese journals [ 2 , 12 , 13 , 65 , 66 , 67 , 68 , 69 ]. On the basis of available data, we select the variables with significant correlation with carbon emission efficiency and remove the repetitive variables.…”

“…In contrast to the city district, the county is located in a more marginal area and governs towns and villages. Counties account for 88% of the land area, 74% of the population, and 60% of total CO 2 emissions in China, and they are of great significance for China to achieve carbon neutrality [ 12 ]. In addition, low-carbon management research is urgent at the county level.…”

“…Changes in consumer behavior towards green behavior reflect their concern about reducing climate change. This includes activities to reduce waste (Vorobeva et al, 2022), minimize carbon footprints (Zeng et al, 2022), buy and consume green products (Lin & Niu, 2018) to changes in diet (Chen & Yang, 2019). Research by Kim & Hall (2019) confirms that public awareness of the environment has shaped a shift in behavior.…”
