“…Although it is beyond the scope of this paper to provide in-depth discussion of transference and countertransference, the clinician must have a thorough working knowledge of them, and the particular, complex, and contradictory ways in which they manifest in traumatized patients and their clinicians. A few essential publications include Allen, 2001;Chu, 1998;Dalenberg, 2000;Davies & Frawley, 1994;Kluft, 1994b;Loewenstein, 1993;Pearlman & Saakvitne, 1995;Wilson & Lindy, 1994;Wilson & Thomas, 2004. “…12 It is known that therapeutic impasses and failures are fairly common in treating victims of psychological trauma. 13 The therapists may be the first ones to identify, within themselves, feelings such as fear, shame and helplessness in patients, because, at first, patients may not always be able to access their affective experiences. As these feelings are often intense and even unbearable, they may terrify the therapeutic dyad, leading to impasses if not recognized and elaborated.…”

“…therapeutic mutuality] is correlated inversely with resistance. By the same token, the qualities and skills of the therapist working with the traumaself are also important for a better outcome [46,47,48]. Many contemporary clinicians agree that treatment-resistance may also have its origins at the therapist's part of the process [48]; thus, Strean [5] talks about "counterresistance."…”

Many contemporary clinicians agree that treatment-resistance may also have its origins at the therapist's part of the process [48]; thus, Strean [5] talks about "counterresistance." Considering resistance as a structural phenomenon inherent in the analytical process which can never be overcome totally [which can only be minimized and should, at least, not exacerbated], Lacan [49] stated even: "there is no resistance on the part of the subject" and further "there is no other resistance to analysis than of the analyst himself " [50].…”
