Cost implication of Line Voltage variation on Three Phase Induction Motor operation

Abstract: Glob ally, there is a drive toward ensuring energy efficiency in all aspect of production operations and power supply systems. Industries are the b ackbone of our modern word, and a significant percentage of industrial operations are motor driven. Three Phase Induction Motor is massively deployed in industries due to its ruggedness, reasonab le cost and ease of maintenance. The energy efficiency of the induction motor is affected b y the internal configurations of the motor and the nature of the supply. Power … Show more

“…NERC has mandated all DISCOs to install prepaid meters for all their customers but this is yet to be fully complied with, as DISCOs complain of lack of funds to procure the needed prepaid meters [5] . The data captures the proportion of the sampled residents that are on prepaid meters, it also reflects the opinion of the customers of their current monthly energy charges, it reflects the average hours of power supply by the DISCO to the residents due to insufficient power generation and load shedding [6] , [7] , [8] , [9] , [10] , and also, it presents the profile of the commonly used electrical equipment, used within the community. According to [11] , [12] the type of electrical equipment used and the behavioral energy usage trend determines a customer׳s monthly electricity bill.…”

“…As at now, a more significant percentage of electricity is yet being generated using fossil fuels in Nigeria (Edomah, 2016). At present, the Nigeria electricity generation floats around 12.5GW This Journal is licensed under a Creative Commons Attribution 4.0 International License for all sources (thermal and hydro) with only 3.5GW to 5.0GW is typically available for onward transmission to the final consumer (Adekitan et al, 2018;Adesanya and Pearce, 2019;. This present generating capacity is highly inadequate for a country that has a population of over 200 million (World meter, 2020).…”

“…Voltage unbalance stimulates increased motor losses which results in increased heat generation that may lead to early motor failure [7], [8]. Voltage unbalance reduces motor efficiency thereby increasing energy cost for the user [9], and by implication, the reduced efficiency increases the system load on the power plant which unnecessarily depletes the energy reserve of the power plant [10]. Voltage unbalance creates a magnetic flux that opposes the main flux, and this causes power and torque oscillation at twice the frequency of the supply.…”
