Cost-Effectiveness of Palliation of Unresectable Esophageal Cancer

Abstract: Conditional to the WTP and current US Medicare costs, palliation of unresectable esophageal cancers with brachytherapy provides the largest amount of NHB and is the strategy with the highest probability of CE. However, some level of uncertainly remains, and wrong decisions will be made until further knowledge is acquired.

“…Among the HEEs related to lung cancer ( 43 – 48 ), the technologies evaluated included medications such as erlotinib, gefitinib, and the pemetrexed-cisplatin combination; and strategies for clinical follow-up and metabolic staging with positron emission tomography. The HEEs related to colorectal cancer ( 49 – 53 ) dealt with technologies such as chemotherapy regimens (modified 5-fluorouracil/leucovorin/oxaliplatin; 5-fluorouracil/folinic acid/oxaliplatin; folinic acid/5-fluorouracil/irinotecan; capecitabine/oxaliplatin; and capecitabine/irinotecan); and a procedure involving transanal endoscopic microsurgery.…”

“…According to the types of treatment (interventions), in 4 studies, esophagectomy were compared with ET (10,(19)(20)(21), 2 studies compared esophagectomy with chemotherapy regimens (22,23), 2 studies contrasted chemotherapy regimens (24,25) and 5 studies compared palliative cares (13,(26)(27)(28)(29). Only 1 study compared minimally invasive esophagectomy versus open esophagectomy (30).…”
