Background: A large number of health economic evaluation (HEE) studies have been published in developed countries. However, Brazilian HEE literature in oncology has not been studied. Objective: To investigate whether the scientific literature has provided a set of HEE in oncology capable of supporting decision making in the Brazilian context.Methods: A systematic review was conducted to identify and characterize studies in this field. We searched multiple databases selecting partial and full HEE studies in oncology (1998-2013).Results: Fifty-five articles were reviewed, of these, 33 (60%) were full health economic evaluations. Type of cancers most frequently studied were: breast (38.2%), cervical (14.6%), lung (10.9%) and colorectal (9.1%). Procedures (47.3%) were the technologies most frequently evaluated. In terms of the intended purposes of the technologies, most (63.6%) were treatments. The majority of the incremental cost-effectiveness ratios (ICERs) reported have been below the cost-effectiveness threshold suggested by the World Health Organization (WHO).Conclusions: There has been an increase in the number of HEEs related to cancer in Brazil. These studies may support decision-making processes regarding the coverage of and reimbursement of healthcare technologies for cancer treatment in Brazil.

This report describes two cases of oesophageal tumours managed by transendoscopic neodymium:yttrium-aluminum-garnet laser ablation and polypectomy snare electrocautery. In each dog oesophagoscopy revealed caudal oesophageal masses, suspected to be Spirocerca lupi-induced oesophageal neoplasia. To resect the masses, transendoscopic neodymium:yttrium-aluminum-garnet laser ablation was used in the first case and polypectomy snare electrocautery in the second. Recovery was uneventful. Histopathology was consistent with oesophageal fibrosarcoma and osteosarcoma in each case, respectively. Follow-up oesophagoscopy revealed apparently healthy oesophageal tissue except for focal scar tissue in the first case. Transendoscopic laser ablation and polypectomy snare electrocautery is a potential non-invasive, cost effective alternative for surgical oesophageal mass resection.

Context: Esophageal cancer is considered as a malignant disease with fatal consequences worldwide. In cancers, it is the sixth most common cause of mortality in the world. Objectives:The aim of the current study was to assess the cost-effectiveness of esophageal cancer treatments by performing a systematic review. Data Sources:We conducted systematic searches in Medline through PubMed, Scopus, Cochran Library, EMBASE, and Web of Science databases. The search was limited to English language publications and studies published before July 17, 2018.Results: Of 2487 records, 14 articles met our inclusion criteria. Most were conducted in The United States of America (USA) and The United Kingdom (UK). The majority of the evaluations (8) followed a healthcare system perspective. Of 14 included studies, 4 compared esophagectomy with endoscopy treatment (ET), 2 compared esophagectomy with chemotherapy regimens, 2 contrasted chemotherapy regimens, and 5 studied compared palliative cares.Conclusions: Among all the assessed studies, the ET was more cost-effective than esophagectomy, but there were contradictory results in palliative care for the treatment of esophageal cancer.
