Cost effectiveness and the role of the National Institute of Health and Care Excellence (NICE) in interventional radiology

Abstract: Healthcare expenditure is continually increasing and projected to accelerate in the future, with an increasing proportion being spent on interventional radiology. The role of cost effectiveness studies in ensuring the best allocation of resources is discussed, and the role of National Institute of Health and Care Excellence (NICE) in determining this. Issues with demonstrating cost effectiveness have been discussed, and it has been found that there is significant scope for improving cost effectiveness, with su… Show more

“…In an increasing number of jurisdictions, a threshold for an additional unit of health gain, expressed in a quality-adjusted life year, is used to determine whether a therapy provides value for money. In Figure 8, the threshold shows how effectiveness and costs of new interventions can be evaluated (16).…”

“…It includes the cost of diagnostics and radiographic techniques like magnetic resonance imaging (MRI), computerized tomography (CT), and ultrasound. 4 Given that diagnostic procedures are expensive, it is crucial to closely control and monitor associated expenses. 5 Diagnostic imaging in all of its forms is responsible for a sizable portion of these costs.…”

“…Compared to conventional surgery, this alternative boasts improved cost-effectiveness and reduced complication rates. [1,2] Such innovation in imaging modality and techniques has driven a transformation in interventional musculoskeletal radiology, particularly concerning the spine. Various options are now available for managing pain, fractures, and tumors using percutaneous radiological intervention, ranging from steroid injections and radiofrequency ablation (RFA) to percutaneous biopsies and vertebral augmentation.…”
