Cost-Effectiveness Analysis of Thrombolytic Treatment for Stroke

Abstract: Purpose: Thrombolysis is used to treat stroke patients based on the National Institute of Neurological Disorders and Stroke study and meta-analysis results. We present a cost-effectiveness analysis based on a probabilistic model of the use of thrombolytic therapy in stroke treatment. Methods: We surveyed patients who had had a stroke during their hospital stay and examined them again 1 year after release from the hospital to obtain data on costs and natural history. We then calculated utility weights using the… Show more

“…1 International health economic studies of intravenous thrombolysis treatment for acute ischemic stroke indicate that the intervention might be cost-effective in the short term and in the long term. [2][3][4][5][6][7][8][9] In all these studies patients, are assumed to receive the standard computed tomography-based approach to treatment.…”

“…Cost-effectiveness studies concerning primary 4 and secondary prevention 5 , diagnostic testing 6 , thrombolysis [7][8][9][10][11][12][13][14][15] , rehabilitation 16 , management systems 17 and also the informal care costs of long-term care after stroke 18,19 have been published. Few studies have explored the cost-effectiveness of mechanical thrombectomy [20][21][22] .…”

“…Therefore, systemic intravenous thrombolysis has been established as a fi rst-line therapeutic strategy in patients admitted for stroke meeting specifi c criteria with cerebral hemorrhage being the main complication [1] . Since then, thrombolyis has proven to be cost-effective [2,3] , but only less than 4% of stroke patients currently benefi t from thrombolytic treatment [4] .…”
