Cost-Aware Cooperative Resource Provisioning for Heterogeneous Workloads in Data Centers

Abstract: Abstract-Recent cost analysis shows that the server cost still dominates the total cost of high-scale data centers or cloud systems. In this paper, we argue for a new twist on the classical resource provisioning problem: heterogeneous workloads are a fact of life in large-scale data centers, and current resource provisioning solutions do not act upon this heterogeneity. Our contributions are threefold: first, we propose a cooperative resource provisioning solution, and take advantage of differences of heteroge… Show more

“…Therefore, we believe that our accurate DVFS control will play a more important role in power saving when the concept of DVFS is extended to the other system components. [35] unreferenced paper Potential extension. In this paper, we only provide a prototype implementation of leveraging online request tracing for accurate DVFS control.…”

“…A game theory based data collection method was also proposed to maximize the energy efficiency with fairness constraints in [28]. To cooperatively schedule resource, a self-adaptive strategy has been proposed for the evolution of cooperation in distributed networks in [29], and cost-aware cooperative resource provisioning for heterogeneous workloads has been studied in [30]. To increase the in-field time of a drone swarm as a sensing grid that collects heterogeneous data, we have to design an adaptive optimization method to cooperatively balance the memory and energy capacities in drone swarms so that the workload of heavy-duty drones can be delegated to others with more resources.…”

“…Here focus is put more on web applications and their scalability. In paper [2], the author discusses about the grouping of homogeneous data and processes the same in chunks. The application workloads which are of similar types have been categorized under one group and are termed as homogeneous workload.…”

“…The application owner can ideally scale up the resources if the workload of a service increases (e.g. more end users start submitting requests at the same time) and thus used to maintain the Quality of Service (QoS) of their service [2]. They can also scale down the resources used when the workload eases down.…”
