Cosmologically Coupled Compact Objects: A Single-parameter Model for LIGO–Virgo Mass and Redshift Distributions

Abstract: We demonstrate a single-parameter route for reproducing higher mass objects as observed in the LIGO–Virgo mass distribution, using only the isolated-binary stellar evolution channel. This single parameter encodes the cosmological mass growth of compact stellar remnants that exceed the Tolman–Oppenheimer–Volkoff limit. Cosmological mass growth appears in known solutions to General Relativity with cosmological boundary conditions. We consider the possibility of solutions with cosmological boundary conditions, wh… Show more

“…However, even allowing for a significant amount of mass in primordial black holes, merger rate predictions are sensitive assumptions about the initial distribution of such sources in binaries or small clusters (e.g., Ali-Haı ¨moud et al 2017;Korol et al 2020;De Luca et al 2020a) as well as possible accretion onto primordial black holes (De Luca et al 2020b). Meanwhile, some of the scenarios proposed for the formation of BH-BH binaries involve physics beyond the standard model (Sakstein et al 2020) and cosmological coupling (Croker et al 2021).…”

“…We have studied the assembly of stellar and black hole mass in low-redshift ultraluminous infrared galaxies, by combining radiative 3 It has recently been proposed that all black holes cosmologically couple and thus gain mass as the cosmological scale factor increases (Croker & Weiner 2019;Croker et al 2020Croker et al , 2021. This cosmological mass increase will cause Keplerian orbits around SMBHs to adiabatically collapse.…”
