Cosmeceuticals Properties of Sea Cucumbers: Prospects and Trends

Abstract: Cosmeceutical, a new term in the cosmetic industry, refers to cosmetic products that contain active ingredients and have medicinal benefits. Cosmeceuticals have attracted increased attention because of their beneficial effects on human health. Sea cucumbers, belonging to the class Holothuroidea, marine invertebrates, are rich in bioactive compounds, including saponin, chondroitin sulphate, collagen, amino acids, and phenols. These bioactive compounds have diverse functional roles as a secondary metabolite and … Show more

“…Possible compounds that have tyrosinase inhibitor activity from sea cucumbers are from phenolic compounds. 12 Research to explore of active compounds from the sea other than as a whitening agent is also carried out to find compounds that can inhibit or neutralize free radicals. Reactive oxygen species (ROS) can cause damage to biomolecules such as proteins, fats, enzymes, DNA or RNA.…”

“…This is related to the content of collagen, fucoidan, and phenolic compounds that found in sea cucumbers. 11,12 Aside from being a cosmetics ingredient, biodiscovery of anticancer compounds from sea cucumber is also carried out by many researchers. 1 Sea cucumbers have attractive anticancer properties because they contain high saponin compounds.…”

“…Aware of this, the cosmetic industry is interested in using macroalgae as a source of bio-sustainable ingredients since they are extremely rich in biologically active compounds ( Table 2), some of which are already documented as functional active skin care agents [24,58]. As an additional advantage for this industry, these ingredients can be cheap, while matching consumers' requests for "natural" and "healthier" products.…”

“…Thus, in recent years, the demand for cosmetic products that containing natural ingredients is rapidly expanding. The advantages of natural ingredients are environmentally friendliness, fewer side effects, and safe use [1,10]. Hence, Cosmeceutical industries are persistently seeking active compounds from natural sources.…”
