CoS Supersedes Pt as Efficient Electrocatalyst for Triiodide Reduction in Dye-Sensitized Solar Cells

Abstract: We report an efficient nonplatinized flexible counter electrode for dye-sensitized solar cells. In combination with a solvent-free ionic liquid electrolyte, we have demonstrated a approximately 6.5% cell with an amphiphilic ruthenium polypyridyl photosensitizer showing excellent stability measured under prolonged light soaking at 60 degrees C. Compared to the Pt deposited PEN film, the CoS deposited PEN film shows higher electrocatalytic activity for the reduction of triiodide. This is expected to have an impo… Show more

“…As an example, according to the theoretical calculations, the E ad I of CoS (0.59 eV) is closed to that of Pt (0.52 eV). Grätzel and co-workers deposited electrochemically CoS nanoparticles on PEN/ITO film to obtain a high-performance Pt-free CE 12 . The energy-conversion efficiency reached the same level of the Pt-CE DSCs, which matches well with the theoretical screening strategy shown in this work.…”

“…The steep slope represents larger exchange current density (j 0 ) on the Ag-PPy-FMWCNTS CE suggesting larger surface area and higher electronic conductivity which is the important key factor implying larger electrocatalytic activity. 56 In addition, J 0 is calculated from the Tafel curves in Fig. 5 and it is inversely proportional to R ct according to Eq.…”

“…Th ese problems have been addressed recently by Graetzel's group, who invented the DSSC in 1991. By using cobalt sulfi de as the cathode material [34], replacing platinum and using a new disulfi de/thiolate (T 2 /T -) redox couple [35] in which T -is 5-mercapto-1-methyltetrazole ion and T 2 is its dimer, Graetzel's group was able to produced a stable DSSC with PCE of up to 6.4%. Th e new electrolyte is not only less corrosive but also has no absorption in the visible region, unlike the triiodide/iodide electrolyte.…”
