Cortical calcification in sturge–weber syndrome on MRI‐SWI: Relation to brain perfusion status and seizure severity

Abstract: Purpose To determine the relationship between calcified cortex and perfusion status of white matter and seizure severity in patients with Sturge-Weber Syndrome (SWS), a sporadic neuro-cutaneous disorder characterized by a leptomeningeal angioma, progressive brain ischemia and a high incidence of seizures, using Susceptibility Weighted Imaging (SWI) and Dynamic Susceptibility Contrast-enhanced Perfusion Weighted Imaging (DSC-PWI). Materials and Methods Fifteen children (ages: 0.9-10 years) with unilateral SWS… Show more

“…Given the abnormal leptomeningeal venous system and impaired cortical venous outflow, these patients have prominent transmedullary venous channels that are best detected by SWI and can mimic DVA (Fig ). Additional imaging findings in SWS can include focal cortical anomalies and atrophy, leptomeningeal enhancement, and cortical calcification …”

“…9), 53 and low-flow VMs, including CCM, 20,23,88 brain capillary telangiectasia, 28 or Sturge-Weber syndrome. 48,110 Most importantly, the findings from SWI, especially at ultrahigh fields (that is, 7 T), 29 are shown to correlate with histopathological studies. 88 SWI is a promising technique since its findings correlate well with "gold-standard" techniques for detecting VMs, including digital subtraction angiography and time-of-flight MRA.…”

“…The postprocessing of the perfusionweighted raw images was performed by a specific software, Signal Processing In NMR (SPIN, The MRI Institute for Biomedical Research, Detroit, USA). 25 Deconvolution with singular value decomposition was used to create quantitative maps of mean transit time (MTT), CBF, and CBV. The position of the arterial input function was automatically determined by using the maximum concentration (Cmax), relative time to peak (TTP), and first moment MTT (fMTT).…”
