Our hypothesis was whether the residue of seed harvest from tropical grasses (Brachiaria sp. and Panicum sp.) as roughage source might result in the similar performance of lambs confined to obtain sustainability in agricultural and food systems by use of this by-product. This study was aimed to evaluate the effects of the residue of seed harvest (straw-hay) from tropical grasses as a roughage source in the feedlot lamb diet on intake, digestibility, performance, carcass characteristics and meat quality. The randomized block design used 36 lambs (six animals per treatment) distributed in six treatments arranged in individual cages on performance assay. The offered straw-hay did not influence nutrient intake and digestibility. Chewing was influenced by straw-hays. In addition, an effect was not observed on the length of the carcass, length of the leg, width and perimeter of the croup, depth of the chest or weight of the left half of the carcass. The averages of gammon, palette and neck yields were considered satisfactory, which may have been caused by the high content of neutral detergent fiber that was offered (511.4 g/Kg for Tupi and 617.6 g/Kg for Basilisk), and the weight of the palette and gammon can result in high commercial value. The meat characteristic was affected by a straw-hay. Diets containing residue of seed harvest from tropical grasses (Brachiaria sp. and Panicum sp.) as a roughage source did not have any effect on the dry matter and crude protein consumption and on the growth performance. So, we recommend the residue of seed harvest from tropical grasses as a fiber source to feedlot lamb diet.

Background: Carcass and sheep meat quality are influenced by several factors, such as race, age, slaughter weight, type of diet, and dietary supplementation. Objective: To evaluate the effect of castration and vitamin E supplementation on performance, carcass characteristics and meat of lambs slaughtered at 45 kg. Methods: Thirty-two male lambs (16 castrated and 16 not castrated) were fed diets with or without the inclusion of vitamin E. The animals had an average age of 180 ± 20 days and a mean weight of 25.1 ± 4.6 kg. Performance was evaluated for 56 days, and the animals were slaughtered when reaching a weight of 45 kg. The experimental design was randomized blocks based on initial weights, and variables were assessed by a 2x2 factorial design (castrated and intact, supplemented or not with vitamin E, with a probability of 5%). Results: Higher proportion (p<0.05) of visceral fat was found in castrated animals (kidney: 2.45%, inguinal: 0.57% and omental: 4.96%) than in intact animals (kidney: 1.25%, inguinal 0.27%. and omental 3.12%). The aged meat samples showed no color differences for any of the treatments, but there were differences in shear force for steaks aged for 7 days, where the castrated animals showed an average of 2.64 kgf and intact animals showed an average 3.29 kgf. The animals supplemented with vitamin E had lower shear forces in non-aged samples. Conclusion: Castration increased deposition of visceral and fat coverage but did not influence the cut yields and total carcass yield. The animals supplemented with vitamin E had lower shear forces in non-aged samples.

A cana-de-açúcar tem sido utilizada na alimentação animal por proporcionar menores custos de produção quando comparada a outros volumosos. No entanto, necessita de complementação com fontes proteicas, como a parte aérea da mandioca. Portanto, o objetivo desse trabalho foi avaliar o desempenho, as características de carcaça e o com- portamento alimentar de ovelhas de descarte em confinamento, alimentadas com dietas contendo cana-de-açúcar in natura (CA), silagem de rama de mandioca (SRM) e concentrado (CO), nas proporções (CA:SRM:CO%): 50:25:25, 25:50:25, 50:50:0 e 25:75:0. Foram utilizadas 32 ovelhas adultas, alojadas em baias individuais por 39 dias, em delineamento inteiramente casualizado com quatro tratamentos e oito repetições. As características avaliadas foram: ingestão de matéria seca, ganho de peso corporal diário, eficiência alimentar, peso de carcaça quente, rendimento de carcaça quente, tempo despendido em ingestão, ruminação e ócio. As médias de peso corporal final das ovelhas não diferiram entre os tratamentos. O ganho de peso corporal diário foi maior (P<0,05) para os animais alimentados com a dieta 50:25:25. A ingestão diária de matéria seca e a eficiência alimentar foram menores (P<0,05) nos tratamen- tos sem concentrado, 50:50:0 e 25:75:0. O peso e o rendimento de carcaça quente não diferiram entre os animais alimentados com diferentes proporções de cana de açúcar, silagem de rama de mandioca e concentrado. Não houve diferença para o tempo despendido com a ingestão, ruminação e ócio. A proporção de 50% de cana-de-açúcar, 25% de silagem de rama de mandioca e 25% de concentrado foi a melhor combinação de alimentos para dieta de ovelhas de descarte em confinamento de terminação.
