Corrosive Environment Assessment and Corrosion-Induced Rockbolt Failure Analysis in a Costal Underground Mine

Abstract: As an effective ground-reinforcing system, rockbolts have been widely used in underground excavations. Corrosion of rockbolts has been one of the most reasons for rockbolts system failure. In this paper, the chemical composition and pH values of the groundwater in Sanshandao Gold mine are first tested. Corrosion of the slotted rockbolts used in roadways of the mine is analysed. The corrosion rate of rockbolts is evaluated based on experimental results from similar corrosive conditions. A time-dependent analyti… Show more

“…Also, steel corrosion is another issue that shortens the service lifetimes of the steel rock bolts. Depending on the region, environmental affects can cause significant repairing costs for rock engineering constructions to prevent undesired collapses and damages (Kahandawa et al, 2021;Lee et al, 2018;Guo et al, 2019).…”

“…However, the durability of these installations may also depend on their corrosion properties in mine environments they are subjected to (Divi et al 2011). Rock bolt corrosion in underground mines is, therefore, a potential threat to the mine safety (Shutter et al 2001; Hebblewhite et al 2003; Elias et al 2013; Spearing et al 2013; Aziz et al 2014; Bylapudi et al 2015; Kang et al 2015; Bylapudi et al 2019; Guo et al 2019; Bylapudi et al 2020; Chen et al 2018). Corrosion is an electrochemical process, and hence understanding the electrochemical properties of the rock bolt steel in underground mines is vital.…”

“…The purpose of the roof support systems is to control the ground for a safe and reliable opening over the design period. Corrosion of these roof control products and ancillaries is a problem to the mine ground control (Shutter et al 2001;Elias et al 2013;Kang et al 2013;Chen et al 2018;Craig 2018;Aritan and Can 2019;Guo et al 2019). Although there are various forms of corrosion mechanisms, the metallic corrosion mechanisms that occur to the roof support systems in an underground mining environment are uniform, crevice, pitting and stress corrosion.…”
