As a portion of intact rock separating joint surfaces, rock bridge plays a significant role in the stability of rock slopes. This paper aims to investigate the effect of different rock bridges on the mechanical properties and failure mode of rock slope by means of the direct shear test and acoustic emission technique. Field conditions were simulated in direct shear tests which were carried out on specimens with rock bridges at different continuity rates, normal stress, arrangements, and joint angles. Experimental results indicate that the strength of specimens is controlled by the rock bridge and the structural plane. The rock bridge contributes to the strength of the specimen, while the through plane weakens the strength of the specimen. The increase of normal stress can weaken the stress concentration near the tip of the rock bridge and improve the shear resistance of the specimen. The different arrangement of rock bridge has little effect on the normal displacement of the specimen, and has a great influence on the shear strength. The shear capacity of the specimen is related to the angle of the crack, and the angle of the crack is approximately proportional to the peak shear strength. For the specimens with different joint occurrence, the mode of crack propagation at the initial stage is basically the same, and the specimen is finally damaged due to the generation of through cracks in the core area of rock bridge. The instantaneous release of the huge energy generated during the experiment along the shear direction is the root cause of the sudden failure of the rock bridge. The formation, aggregation, and transfixion process of rock bridge is of concern and has been experimentally investigated in this paper for the prevention and control of the locked section rock slope with sudden disasters.

According to the strain-softening characteristics of rock mass, an ideal elastic strain-softening model is developed, and the surrounding rock of tunnels is subdivided into the plastic broken zone, plastic strain-softening zone, and elastic zone. Based on the generalized spatially mobilized plane criterion, an elastic-plastic analytical solution of a circular tunnel is derived. The effects of intermediate principal stress, strain softening, and dilatancy are considered in the unified solution. The stress, displacement, and plastic zone radius of surrounding rock based on the SMP criterion are compared with those based on the Mohr–Coulomb criterion. Furthermore, the effects of parameters such as the softening modulus, dilatancy angle, and internal friction angle on the deformation and stress of tunnels are discussed. It has been found that the larger the dilatancy angle is, the larger the plastic zone displacement and the radius of the broken zone are. The larger the internal friction angle, the smaller the sizes of the plastic zone, the strain-softening zone, and the broken zone are. The deformation of surrounding rock in the broken zone is more sensitive to the internal friction angle than that in the strain-softening zone. The unified solution based on the SMP criterion provides a well understanding for the elastic-plastic state of tunnels, which can be the guidance for tunnel excavations and support designs.

Progressive failure in rock bridges along pre-existing discontinuities is one of the predominant destruction modes of rock slopes. The monitoring and prediction of the impending progressive failure is of great significance to ensure the stability of the rock structures and the safety of the workers. The deformation and fracture of rocks are complex processes with energy evolution between rocks and the external environment. Regarding the whole slope as a system, an energy evolution equation of rock slope systems during progressive failure was established by an energy method of systemic stability. Then, considering the weakening effect of joints and the locking effect of rock bridges, a method for calculating the safety factor of rock slopes with a locked section was proposed. Finally, the energy evolution equation and the calculation method of safety factor are verified by a case study. The results show that when the energy dissipated in the progressive failure process of rock bridges is less than the energy accumulated by itself, the deformation energy stored in the slope system can make the locked section deform continuously until the damage occurs. The system energy equal to zero can be used as the critical criterion for the dynamic instability of the rock slope with locked section. The accumulated deformation energy in the slope system can promote the development of the cracks in the locked section, and the residual energy in the critical sliding state is finally released in the form of kinetic energy, which is the main reason for the progressive dynamic instability of rock slopes.

Conjugate joint is one of the most common joint forms in natural rock mass, which is produced by different tectonic movements. To better understand the preexisting flaws, it is necessary to investigate joint development and its effect on the deformation and strength of the rock. In this study, uniaxial compression tests of granite specimens with different conjugate joints distribution were performed using the GAW-2000 compression-testing machine system. The PCI-2 acoustic emission (AE) testing system was used to monitor the acoustic signal characteristics of the jointed specimens during the entire loading process. At the same time, a 3D digital image correlation (DIC) technique was used to study the evolution of stress field before the peak strength at different loading times. Based on the experimental results, the deformation and strength characteristics, AE parameters, damage evolution processes, and energy accumulation and dissipation properties of the conjugate jointed specimens were analyzed. It is considered that these changes were closely related to the angle between the primary and secondary joints. The results show that the AE counts can be used to characterize the damage and failure of the specimen during uniaxial compression. The local stress field evolution process obtained by the DIC can be used to analyze the crack initiation and propagation in the specimen. As the included angle increases from 0° to 90°, the elastic modulus first decreases and then increases, and the accumulative AE counts of the peak first increase and then decrease, while the peak strength does not change distinctly. The cumulative AE counts of the specimen with an included angle of 45° rise in a ladder-like manner, and the granite retains a certain degree of brittle failure characteristics under the axial loading. The total energy, elastic energy, and dissipation energy of the jointed specimens under uniaxial compression failure were significantly reduced. These findings can be regarded as a reference for future studies on the failure mechanism of granite with conjugate joints.

The prediction of rockburst proneness is the basis of preventing and controlling rockburst disasters in rock engineering. Based on energy theory and damage mechanics, the quantitative functional relationship between joint density and energy density was derived. Then, the theoretical results were verified by numerical simulation and uniaxial compression test, and the effect of joint density on rockburst proneness of the elastic-brittle-plastic rock mass was discussed. The results show that the relationship between the joint density and the dissipated energy index of the jointed rock mass is a logarithmic function. With the same total input energy, the higher the joint density, the more the damage dissipation energy. Even in the case of high joint density, the rock mass still has limited resistance to external failure. Under the same joint density, the strength of parallel jointed rock mass is better than that of the cross-jointed rock mass, and the parallel jointed rock mass can accumulate more elastic strain energy and has higher rockburst proneness. The joint density is closely related to the ability of the rock mass to store high strain energy. The higher the joint density is, the weaker the ability to accumulate the elastic strain energy of rock mass is and the lower the rockburst proneness is. It is helpful to predict rockburst proneness by investigating and studying the properties of geological discontinuities. The research results have some theoretical and engineering guiding significance for the prediction of rockburst proneness of the jointed rock mass.

This paper presents a comprehensive engineering method to investigate the failure mechanism of the jointed rock slopes. The field geology survey is first carried out to obtain the slope joint data. A joint network model considering the structural complexity of rock mass is generated in the PFC software. The synthetic rock mass (SRM) approach for simulating the mechanical behavior of jointed rock mass is employed, in which the flat-jointed bonded-particle model (FJM) and smooth joint contact model (SJM) represent intact rock and joints, respectively. Subsequently, the effect of microparameters on macromechanical properties of rock is investigated for parameter calibration. Moreover, the scale effect is analyzed by multiscale numerical tests, and the representative elementary volume (REV) size in the selected research area is found as 16 m × 16  m × 16 m. The microparameters of the SRM model are calibrated to match the mechanical properties of the engineering rock mass. Finally, an engineering case from Shuichang open-pit mine is analyzed and the failure process of the slope during the excavation process from micro- to macroscale is obtained. It has been found that failure occurs at the bottom of the slope and gradually develops upwards. The overall failure of the slope is dominated by the shallow local tension fracture and wedge failure.
