Corrosion Resistance of Passive Films on Orthodontic Bands in Fluoride-Containing Artificial Saliva

Abstract: The purpose of this study was to evaluate the influence of fluoride ions on the corrosion behavior of orthodontic bands in artificial saliva. Thirty as-received orthodontic bands were divided into five groups randomly, and then immersed in fluoride-containing artificial saliva with different NaF concentrations (0wt.%, 0.1wt.%, 0.3wt.%, 0.5wt.% and 1wt.%) separately at 37℃ for 30 days. Potentiodynamic polarization, electrochemical impedance spectroscopy(EIS) and Mott-Schottky measurements were used to study the… Show more

“…Corrosion of SS bands and brackets [117,118,288,289] also increases in the presence of fluoride ions. Chantarawaratit and Yanisarapan [289] argued that acidulated phosphate fluoride gel should not be used in patients wearing fixed metal-based orthodontic appliances.…”

“…This attack has been associated with other corrosion types [114,116], such as the one caused by the well-adherent biofilm that forms during orthodontic treatments (Figure 7)-discussed further in Section 2.4.9. Aggressive ions in saliva, such as chlorine and fluoride [29,42,117]-especially under acidic conditions…”

“…The corrosion resistance of SS wires are relatively favorable. However, this material is challenged by the hostile environment in the mouth, as it is susceptible to localized corrosion in a low pH environment containing chloride and fluoride ions [ 2 , 3 ]. Previous researches showed high concentrations of nickel in the saliva and oral mucosa of patients wearing orthodontic appliances [ 4 ].…”

“…For instance, the high corrosion resistance of stainless steel and titanium alloys used in dental devices is based on the formation of a passive oxide film at the metal surface when it is in contact with oxygen from the air, or is immersed in a water-containing media. This passive oxide films may experience dissolution in a strong acid media such as chloride and fluoride-containing products [7][8][9][10]. These are usually commercial products such as soft-drinks, toothpastes and mouthwashes.…”
