Corrosion Performance of Aluminum-containing Zinc Coatings

Abstract: Corrosion performance of zinc coatings containing aluminum in excess of 5 % was assessed in modified salt-spray tests. X-ray diffraction studies indicated that the corrosion products consisted mainly of simonkolleite Zn 5 (OH) 8 Cl 2 · H 2 O, hydrozincite Zn 5 (OH) 6 (CO 3 ) 2 , and zinc aluminum carbonate hydroxide hydrate Zn 6 Al 2 (OH) 16 CO 3 · 4(H 2 O). The content of Zn 6 Al 2 (OH) 16 CO 3 · 4(H 2 O) in the corrosion product increased as the aluminum content in the coatings increased. SEM-EDX analyses re… Show more

“…Corrosion gradually occurred throughout the entire eutectic area (Figure 9), which was also reflected by a macroscopically visible color change over the sample surface where eutectics formed. The selective dissolution of eutectic areas has also been documented in other works [18,24,37]. Despite this, the local dissolution of η phase dendrites was also observed at higher magnifications (Figure 9a).…”

“…When their formation takes place in the presence of chlorine, a simonkolleite with the formula Zn 5 (OH) 8 Cl 2 ·H 2 O is also formed [ 27 , 28 ]. The formation of corrosion products may be accompanied by the formation of smithsonite with the formula ZnCO 3, or gordaite with the formula Na 4 Zn 4 SO 4 (OH) 6 Cl 2 ·H 2 O [ 27 , 29 , 30 ]. In the EDX spectrum obtained from white corrosion products, no presence of aggressive ions such as chlorides, which could accelerate the corrosion, was observed ( Figure 5 ).…”
