“…According to the result of XRF analysis of HfB 2 and SiC raw powders, some oxygen contamination, such as B 2 O 3 , HfO 2 , or their mixture, occurred naturally on the HfB 2 surface. This oxygen contamination could considerably hinder the densification of diborides through the reduction of boron activity 6 . The decrease in boron activity was accompanied by a reduction of the densification rate, which, in turn, promotes grain coarsening by evaporation–condensation kinetics.…”

“…In contrast to most other ceramics, this material can be machined using the electrical‐discharge machining method for its high electrical conductivity 1–5 . This high electrical conductivity, coupled with its excellent corrosion resistance to molten metals or nonbasic slags, allows this ceramic to be used as a cathode material for refractory applications 6 …”

“…Despite the applications and importance of ZrB 2 , only limited information is available concerning the electrochemical corrosion characteristics of this material in aqueous environments. Previous studies on monolithic ZrB 2 and ZrB 2 composites demonstrate that the corrosion of ZrB 2 can occur in aqueous environments . The corrosion behavior of ZrB 2 (sintered with the addition of Si 3 N 4 as a sintering aid) in acid aqueous solutions containing chlorides, perchlorates, sulfates, oxalates, or fluorides was studied by Monticelli et al They found that fluorides have higher solution aggressiveness than perchlorates, chlorides, sulfates, and oxalates.…”
