Tribological problems and corrosion degradation have been recognized as essential risks for total joint replacements, especially for all-metal arthroplasty. Few studies have focused on the interactions between tribology and corrosion (tribocorrosion) for implant materials. This paper addresses the importance of understanding tribocorrosion and the evaluation of such materials in simulated biological environments. Due to the complex effect of proteins on tribocorrosion, which has been demonstrated in previous studies, this study focuses towards understanding the effects of amino acids as aspects of material degradation. Dulbecco's Modified Eagle's Medium (DMEM) is a cell culture solution. It contains comparable amount and types of amino acids to normal synovial fluid in human joints. 0.36% NaCl solution was employed to isolate the biological species. Three materials were tested; High carbon (HC) CoCrMo (contains 0.19% carbon), low carbon (LC) CoCrMo (widely used materials for total joint replacement) and stainless steel UNS S31603 (316L). Integrated electrochemical tests supported by measurement of friction and near surface chemical analysis were carried out to enable their tribocorrosion behaviour to be fully characterized. As a general conclusion, amino acids were found to react with materials under tribological contacts and form complex organometallic/oxides which lubricate the metallic sample surface. Tribocorrosion plays a very important role in material degradation in the studied environments. HC CoCrMo shows superior wear, corrosion and tribocorrosion resistance -the material characteristics and their effect on the different tribocorrosion processes are discussed.

The implant manufacturing process includes texturization to enhance its adhesion and marking the final products for their identification, long-term quality control and traceability. Marking is carried out after cleaning and prior to sterilization. These marks eventually can concentrate stress leading to premature failure. The marked areas are defective regions that affect the passive film formed on the metallic biomaterials used for implants favoring the onset of various corrosion types, such as pitting, crevice or fatigue. This study aims to evaluate the effect of a Yb optical fiber laser marking processes used for metallic implants on the localized corrosion resistance of the austenitic stainless steel ISO 5832-1. This is one of the most used materials for manufacturing implants. The electrochemical behavior of the marked areas obtained by this method was evaluated in a phosphate-buffered saline (PBS) solution with pH of 7.4 and the results were compared with unmarked samples. All tested surfaces were prepared according to the recommendations for the use in surgery. For localized corrosion resistance evaluation, electrochemical tests such as monitoring the open circuit potential (OCP), electrochemical impedance spectroscopy (EIS) and cyclic potentiodynamic polarization measurements were performed. The results showed that the laser marks affect the protector characteristics of the biomaterial's passive film. Lower pitting resistance was associated to the laser marked areas.

The high corrosion resistance and good biocompatibility of titanium and its alloys are due to a thin passive film that consists essentially of titanium dioxide. There is increasing evidence, however, that under certain conditions extensive titanium release may occur in vivo. An ion-beam-assisted sputtering deposition technique has been used to deposit thick and dense TiO2 films on titanium and stainless steel surfaces. In this study, using the following measurements these TiO2 films have been investigated in a phosphate-buffered saline solution: (1) open-circuit potential versus time of exposure, (2) electrochemical impedance spectroscopy, (3) potentiodynamic polarization, and (4) Mott-Schottky plot. A higher electrical film resistance, lower passive current density, and lower donor density (in the order of 10(15) cm-3) have been measured for the sputter-deposited oxide film on titanium in contrast to the naturally formed passive oxide film on titanium (donor density in the order of 10(20) cm-3). The improved corrosion protection of the sputter-deposited oxide film can be explained by a low defect concentration and, consequently, by a slow mass transport process across the film. As opposed to TiO2 on titanium, a deviation from normal n-type semiconducting Mott-Schottky behavior was observed for TiO2 on stainless steel.
