Si se divide el curso del desarrollo del movimiento ultraísta en distintas fases, de lanzamiento, auge y declive, el año 1920 se destaca como el comienzo de la segunda fase, cuando la nueva tendencia alcanza cierta visibilidad en la escena cultural. Sin embargo, con el crecimiento del movimiento también surgen diversos problemas que afectan su evolución. Estos incluyen el liderazgo equívoco de Rafael Cansinos Assens, la presencia divisiva de Vicente Huidobro, los conflictos personales entre varios miembros y la poca estabilidad de las revistas ultraístas. En este ensayo se estudian las afiliaciones cambiantes y las líneas de falla que se manifestaron dentro del grupo, además de los papeles desempeñados por Ramón Gómez de la Serna, Isaac del Vando-Villar y Guillermo de Torre.
