Kidney stone disease is a worldwide metabolism-associated disorder with a high incidence of renal dysfunction. However, effective methods to prevent crystalline nephropathy are still lacking owing to the absence of aetiological research. Shen'an (SA) capsules are prepared from Chinese medicinal compounds and are considered a promising treatment for the prevention of crystal-induced renal injury. In this study, 24 mice were randomly divided into four groups: saline, oxalate, SA-treated (via preventive administration) and SA-only groups. A metabolomics analysis based on ultra-high-performance liquid chromatography coupled with quadrupole time-of-flight mass spectrometry (UPLC-Q-TOF/MS) was performed to explore the plasma metabolic profiles among the different groups. The amount of crystal deposition and the decline in kidney function were significantly alleviated by the use of SA capsule. A total of 24 metabolites that showed a reversal trend following SA capsule administration were identified as plasma biomarkerss of the preventive effects of SA capsules on crystal-induced renal injury. Most of these metabolites were involved in the metabolisms of lipid metabolism, energy metabolism, glutathione metabolism and vitamin metabolism. In conclusion, SA capsules exert a preventive effect in mice with crystal-induced kidney injury via the regulation of multiple metabolic pathways.

BackgroundThe aim of our study was to evaluate the serum concentration of sialic acid (SA) and high-sensitivity C-reactive protein (hs-CRP) in prehypertensive patients and the possible correlations between these 2 factors with blood pressure in such patients.Material/MethodsWe studied 61 prehypertensive patients, 70 hypertensive patients, and 50 controls with normal blood pressure. Lipid profile, hs-CRP, SA, and body mass index (BMI) were estimated in all groups. Associations between SA and hs-CRP and blood pressure were analyzed using multiple linear regressions.ResultsSA and hs-CRP levels were higher in the prehypertension group than that in the control group and were lower than that in the hypertension group. Multiple linear regression demonstrated that fasting glucose, BMI, SA, and hs-CRP correlated with systolic blood pressure and that low-density lipoprotein, BMI, SA, and hs-CRP correlated independently with diastolic pressure (P<0.05).ConclusionsOur findings suggest that in prehypertension, there is an association between serum SA and hs-CRP levels and blood pressure.

Background: To investigate the relationship between the intima-media thickness of the carotid artery (CA-IMT) and its major risk factors in maintenance hemodialysis (MHD) patients. Methods: Seventy-five MHD patients and 30 healthy volunteers were enrolled. The MHD patients were divided into 3 subgroups according to their CA-IMT value. Results: CA-IMT values in the MHD group were significantly higher than those in the control group. The differences in age, systolic blood pressure (SBP), and levels of serum albumin, prealbumin, cholesterol and serum phosphate between the increased IMT group and the normal IMT group were significant. SBP and serum phosphate levels were also greater in the abnormal IMT group than those in the normal IMT group. Significant relationships were found between CA-IMT and age, SBP, and serum levels of phosphate, albumin and prealbumin. In multiple regression analysis, a high serum phosphate level, low serum prealbumin level and high SBP were significant independent risk factors of increased CA-IMT. Conclusions: CA-IMT was increased dramatically in MHD patients. A high serum phosphate level, low serum prealbumin level and high SBP may be associated with advanced arteriosclerosis.
