Correlations between the in-plane uniaxial anisotropy and magnetostriction in amorphous (Co/sub 93/Zr/sub 7/)/sub 100-x/(RE)/sub x/ thin films

Abstract: The coherent anisotropy and the magnetostriction constants A, were studied in amorphous r.f. sputtered (Co,Zr,) , , ( R E ) ? (RE = rare earth) thin films for a large variety of magnetic rare earth, and the concentration range 0 I x 13. During the deposition magnetic field of 700 Oe was applied in the film plane. For RE = Nd, Pr, Jly and Tb substitutions, a well defined in-plane uniaxial anisotropy is formed. K,, and A, both increase linearly with increasing RE content, the absolute values being related to the… Show more

“…It is known that the TbFe 2 film has a perpendicular easy axis. Several models including pair ordering [16], anelastic distortion of magnetic atom environment [17], and hexagonal planar units with a preferred axis perpendicular to the film plane [18,19] have been proposed to account for the origin of the perpendicular anisotropy of TbFe 2 film. In ideal ferrimagnetic TbFe 2 -single layer, the model in Figure 4(a) can be used to explain the angular response of the saturation magnetostriction.…”
