Correlations Among Gingival Indices:

Abstract: Using an experimental gingivitis model, 99 subjects completed a 3-week study to determine the correlations between a visual index of gingivitis, the Modified Gingival Index (MGI), and the Gingival Index (GI), the Interdental Bleeding Index (IBI), and the Papillary Bleeding Index (PBI). Following a baseline examination consisting of the MGI and either the GI, IBI, or PBI, each subject received a full mouth scaling and rubber cup polishing to render the teeth plaque and calculus free. Subjects then rinsed twice … Show more

“…This noninvasive index is a modification of the gingival index (Loe & Silness 1963) and was developed to increase sensitivity in the low-region of the scoring scale. In a recent three week clinical study, the MGI correlated significantly with the GI (Lobene et al 1988). Each subject had minimum plaque and minimum gingivitis means of >!.95.…”

“…Children with identified caries were referred to the local public dental service for treatment as required. Measures of debris on the child's teeth (Debris Index) and gingival inflammation (Modified Gingival Index) were also included as proxy indicators of tooth brushing 38. Dental examiners were trained and calibrated in ICDAS II using the ICDAS Foundation e-Learning training programme (https://www.icdas.org/elearning-programmes).…”
