Correlation of systemic immune-inflammation index and moderate/major depression in patients with depressive disorders: a large sample cross-sectional study

Abstract: ObjectiveTo evaluate the clinical value of systemic immune-inflammation index (SII) based on peripheral blood neutrophil, lymphocyte, and platelet count in evaluating the subtype and severity of depression in patients with depressive disorder.MethodsThis retrospective cohort study was conducted in the Third People’s Hospital of Fuyang City from January 1, 2020 to December 31, 2022. The data included sociodemographic information at admission, clinical data, discharge diagnosis and inflammatory markers. Patients… Show more

“…As one study suggests, SII is an independent risk factor for depression, with a 2% increase in the risk of depression for every 100 units of increase [29]. Another cross-sectional study on patients with depression showed that high SII at admission can be used to identify moderate/major depression, indicating that early prevention of depression can be based on SII and anti-in ammatory treatment can be used to avoid major depression [30]. The peripheral immune system involvement mechanism of depression is the activation of the innate immune system, represented by neutrophils, to produce cytokines, activate the complement system, and activate the adaptive immune system through antigen presentation [31].…”

“…SII is positively correlated with PASI scores ( 30 – 32 ), and the correlation with treatment response ( 31 , 33 , 34 ) has been confirmed by some studies. In addition, correlations have been found between SII and metabolic syndrome ( 64 ), cardiovascular disease ( 65 ), and depression ( 66 ) in psoriasis comorbidities. Taken together, SII appears to be a possible biomarker associated with psoriasis disease activity, treatment response, and the development of comorbidities, thus helping patients to develop more personalized and effective treatment strategies.…”

“…Chronic systemic inflammation can promote tumor progression by interfering with the action of some antitumor drugs, stimulating angiogenesis and tumor cell proliferation, and by downregulating some aspects of antitumor immunity . Highlighting the clinical relevance of these data, the systemic inflammation index (SII) has been posited as a biological indicator of depressive disorders . This biomarker is used as a prognostic factor in diseases with inflammation-related causes .…”
