Correlation of Photocatalysis and Photoluminescence Effect in Relation to the Surface Properties of TiO2:Tb Thin Films

Abstract: In this paper structural, optical, photoluminescence, and photocatalytic properties of TiO2and TiO2:(2.6 at. % Tb) thin films have been compared. Thin films were prepared by high-energy reactive magnetron sputtering process, which enables obtaining highly nanocrystalline rutile structure of deposited films. Crystallites sizes were 8.7 nm and 6.6 nm for TiO2and TiO2:Tb, respectively. Surface of prepared thin films was homogenous with small roughness of ca. 7.2 and 2.1 nm in case of TiO2and TiO2:Tb samples, resp… Show more

“…This relationship was previously reported for the direct radiative and lower recombination of the generated carriers in TiO 2 58 . However, the accurate explanation of photoluminescence - photocatalysis relationship needs more complex analysis of the different types of recombination, which occurs in CNTs and TNTs 58 60 . For the indirect radiative recombination, the photoluminescence intensity- photocatalytic activity relationship depends on the type of the incorporated dopant and oxygen vacancies at the surface, whereas the increase of defects and oxygen vacancies at surface produced higher photoluminescence intensity and photocatalytic activity 59 .…”

“…This fact can be directly connected with decrease of PL-intensity for the film with higher amount of Eu. Most probably, very small EuO 2 and Eu 2 O 3 agglomerates were located on the surface of TiO 2 fibers [44,47]. For this reason increase of the voids number in…”

“…Our most recent measurements indicate that the PL of our Eu surface-doped TiO 2 NP samples increase markedly above that of TiO 2 NPs after sitting on the shelf for at least a month. Because TiO 2 is an indirect band gap semiconductor, the intensity of photoluminescence is directly related to the photocatalytic efficiency of metal-doped TiO 2 nanomaterials [12]. Thus, the increase of shelf-stored versus asprepared Eu surface-doped TiO 2 NPs may be significant for their potential use in photocatalysis.…”
